Schefter Walks Back Commanders Draft Bombshell

Amid draft buzz, Adam Schefter clarifies his remarks on a potential Commanders pick, underscoring the speculative nature of linking Jeremiyah Love to Washington.

Washington's Draft Dilemma: Jeremiyah Love in the Spotlight

The NFL offseason is always ripe with speculation, and this week was no exception. Adam Schefter, the well-known ESPN insider, stirred up quite the buzz when he suggested that Notre Dame's standout running back, Jeremiyah Love, might be heading to the Washington Commanders with their No. 7 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. However, Schefter later clarified that this was merely a prediction, not insider information from the Commanders' camp.

The Birth of a Draft Rumor

The conversation began on the “Pat McAfee Show,” where Schefter proposed that Washington could be the ideal destination for Love. The idea of pairing Love with quarterback Jayden Daniels had Commanders fans dreaming of an offensive renaissance. Yet, when Schefter appeared on The Team 980, he stressed that his comments were based on Love’s general evaluation across the league, not a scoop from Washington's draft strategy.

“Let me be very clear, I’ve never spoken to Washington about Jeremiyah Love. Never once, okay?

But I’ve spoken to a lot of people about Jeremiyah Love and the kind of player he is. … If that real great player gets past four, wouldn’t it make sense to take him at seven?”

Schefter explained.

Why Love is on Washington's Radar

Jeremiyah Love is no ordinary prospect. Fans who watched him dismantle USC with 228 rushing yards last October know the kind of explosive talent he brings to the field.

His speed and versatility, honed from his track days in St. Louis, make him a three-down threat capable of turning any game on its head.

In his junior year, Love was a force to be reckoned with. He took home the 2025 Doak Walker Award and was named a unanimous All-American, leading Notre Dame to a strong 10-2 season. His stats are eye-popping:

  • 1,372 rushing yards at an impressive 6.9 yards per carry
  • 18 rushing touchdowns
  • 27 receptions for 280 yards and three receiving touchdowns

Washington's Offensive Puzzle

Coming off a disappointing 5-12 season, the Commanders are in dire need of a game-changer. Head coach Dan Quinn is well aware that their backfield lacks a true star. Although they recently signed Rachaad White, the current roster doesn't inspire confidence in a division as fierce as the NFC East.

Drafting a running back so high is always a gamble, but Love’s ability to catch passes and break tackles makes him a tantalizing prospect. If he slips past the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants, Washington's GM Adam Peters will face a pivotal choice.

Will they seize the chance to add a dynamic offensive weapon, or focus on bolstering their edge and offensive line? As the draft approaches, the stakes couldn't be higher.
