Saahdiq Charles had started to build a little momentum in Carolina, and that’s exactly why this latest setback stings so much.
The Panthers have been giving the former LSU offensive lineman a real look this summer, especially with starting left guard Damien Lewis sidelined by injury. Charles has worked with the first-string offensive line and, by all accounts, made the most of the opportunity. But now he’s dealing with a calf injury, and that’s a familiar and frustrating storyline for him.
Calf trouble followed Charles during his time with the Washington Commanders, where injuries kept showing up just as he seemed to be getting traction. It’s the same kind of problem again now, though the severity of this latest issue hasn’t been disclosed. What is clear is that any meaningful missed time could be costly.
That’s because Charles does not have much room to maneuver in Carolina.
He is trying to secure a roster spot after earning another reserve/futures contract after the 2026 campaign, which gave him a boost at a key moment. Still, the competition is unforgiving, and the Panthers likely wanted to see him get preseason work before making any final calls.
That chance may still come, but probably not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame game against the Arizona Cardinals. If he’s out beyond that, the situation gets a lot more precarious.
Charles has already lived through this pattern before. Washington kept giving him opportunities under previous head coach Ron Rivera, but he never fully locked down a job. When Dan Quinn and Adam Peters took over, they weren’t sold, and Charles has had trouble holding onto a spot elsewhere, too.
Now the same kind of bad timing has surfaced again just when things were starting to look up.
The Panthers are already dealing with injuries along the offensive line, with Ikem Ekwonu, Taylor Moton, and Lewis all unavailable. In that kind of environment, every snap matters. Charles, the 2020 fourth-round pick, needs to be on the field, not trying to work through another setback.
He’s always had the size and the tools. The flashes have been there.
But he still hasn’t put it all together, and time is not on his side. If this calf injury ends up hurting his shot at Carolina’s 53-man roster, it would be a brutal turn after he finally seemed to be turning a corner.
