Rasul Douglas arrived at Commanders training camp on Tuesday as the new face in the cornerback room, and Washington is betting his experience can help him catch up fast.
The veteran cornerback reportedly agreed to terms on July 6, with the team announcing the deal on July 9 during the NFL dead period. He was officially added to the roster on Monday after Nick Bellore retired.
Douglas missed the offseason program, so he didn’t get the spring reps, scheme work, or bonding time that usually come with a new team. Still, this isn’t unfamiliar territory for him.
He said he’s had to jump into situations like this before, including last year in Miami.
“Just be ready,” Douglas said during a Wednesday press conference. “I’ve been a lot of places.
Last year I came in to Miami two days before the first game, and then in the 10th play of the game I’m out there. I didn’t know what’s going on, but the coach told me he let me know before every play.
It’s different, but you have to make sure you’re ready when the opportunities come.”
For Douglas, the immediate task is simple: absorb the system and get comfortable with the Commanders’ culture as quickly as possible. He doesn’t need to walk in and be the centerpiece of the defense right away, because Washington already has a solid group in place.
Trey Amos is still on active/PUP with soft-tissue soreness, but the room has gotten strong early work from Mike Sainristil and Amik Robertson, while Antonio Hamilton is back in Washington. That’s part of why Douglas fits as a luxury addition rather than a desperation move.
General manager Adam Peters made that clear when he talked about the signing on Tuesday.
“We’re always looking to add really good players, and Rasul’s been a really good player in this league for a long time,” Peters said in a Tuesday presser. “He’s played at a high level.
He’s started a lot of games. He started a lot of games recently, and he always performs.
So, when you have an opportunity to add to that room, it’s not a deficiency in the room at all. You just want to make each room as strong as it can be.
So, getting him in, we’re really excited about that. And we just got a chance to meet him yesterday.
He’s big, and he’s played a lot of good ball.”
The résumé backs that up. Douglas has 93 starts in 135 games over nine NFL seasons, and over the past six seasons he’s been an every-down player for four different teams. He’s also built a reputation as a ballhawk, with 21 career interceptions and three pick sixes.
If Washington needs him to slide into a starting job in 2026, or if he wins one outright in camp, Douglas believes he’ll be ready for it.
“A player who’s going to give his all,” Douglas said. “I’m going to be passionate about the game.
I like celebrating. I just like making plays, honestly.
That’s all I think about is making plays and helping the team win as best I can.”
