Rachaad White’s absence from back-to-back Washington Commanders practices has sparked a wave of speculation, and it all circles back to a clip from the team’s ALS ice bucket challenge earlier this week.
White, who is dealing with an undisclosed injury, was among several Commanders players seated for the challenge on Monday in honor of coach Anthony Lynn’s former player, Chris Johnson. In the video, the group jolts as cold water is poured over them, and White appears to react normally in the moment.
That detail is exactly why some fans have latched onto the clip while trying to make sense of his sudden practice absence. Since the video was posted, White has now missed two straight practice sessions.

White’s arrival in Washington came after four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the Commanders in free agency, a contract that includes $1,715,000 in guaranteed money, a $400,000 signing bonus and another $2,000,000 in performance incentives.
Now entering his fifth NFL season, White has put together 2,656 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns on 677 carries, plus 205 catches for 1,450 yards and 11 scores. His 2025 season was quieter: 572 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 132 carries, along with 40 receptions for 218 yards, even though he played all 17 games and made eight starts.
A big part of Washington’s interest in White is his familiarity with quarterback Jayden Daniels. The two were teammates at Arizona State in 2021.
Still, the Commanders have a crowded backfield. Jacory Croskey-Merritt is back after leading the franchise with 805 rushing yards as a rookie, while Jeremy McNichols remains on the roster. Washington also brought in Jerome Ford, sixth-round pick Kaytron Allen and undrafted rookie Robert Henry Jr.
That depth could keep White’s workload smaller than some expected when he signed. His receiving ability gives Washington another option, though, and the team could lean on him as a complementary piece alongside Croskey-Merritt.

Former Commanders Starter Hits Cruel Setback After Fresh Start
Tyler Biadasz had barely gotten settled into his fresh start with the Chargers after leaving Washington, where he was released before landing a multi-year deal in Los Angeles. The veteran center was part of the kind of offseason move that can reset a line in a hurry, giving the Chargers a proven starter and giving Biadasz a chance to reestablish himself in a new place.
Then came a brutal turn during a joint practice with the 49ers, where Biadasz went down with a left knee injury. Jim Harbaugh has said the center is getting a second opinion, and the situation now hangs over a position group that was counting on him to stabilize the middle. [Read more 🡒]
Commanders Just Reached A Level Fans Could Only Imagine
The Commanders rise off the field has started to look every bit as dramatic as anything happening on it. Washington is now valued at $9.64 billion, a figure that puts the franchise 11th in the NFL and reflects a 30% jump from last year, a leap that would have sounded hard to believe not long ago for a team trying to rebuild its identity on multiple fronts.
There is still plenty of room to climb, with the Cowboys sitting at the top of the league and the Bengals at the bottom of the current valuation list. But the bigger story for Washington is what comes next, because sustained success and the planned new stadium in D.C. in 2030 could push the franchise into an even different financial tier.
