The Washington Commanders have made some intriguing moves in free agency, bolstering both their defense and offensive arsenal. However, their offensive line remains a point of concern.
While they managed to re-sign left guard Chris Paul, the decision to release center Tyler Biadasz has left many scratching their heads. The team hasn't brought in any outside talent for the line, signaling confidence in their current roster.
Enter Nick Allegretti, who now finds himself in the mix for the starting center position. Allegretti, known for his grit and determination, is embracing the challenge head-on.
In a recent chat on The Team 980, Allegretti laid out his ambitions clearly. "I'm not afraid of competition... whoever it is doesn't really change my approach. I think the important thing is showing, using my intangibles, my leadership skills that I've worked hard on developing, and the football IQ that I pride myself on, and showing the coaches that those skills can be elevated to a level above what I used them at guard."
Drafted in the seventh round by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019, Allegretti has always been one to fight for his spot. He didn't see much starting action with the Chiefs but seized the opportunity with Washington, starting all 17 games at left guard in 2024.
However, after the Commanders traded for Laremy Tunsil and reshuffled their line, Allegretti found himself back in a backup role, starting only four games last year. Notably, he stepped in at center for the injured Biadasz in the season finale.
Now, Allegretti is poised to compete for the center role full-time, depending on how the offseason unfolds. The Commanders have shown faith in him by offering an extension before free agency, indicating he's a key piece in their future plans.
Regardless of where he ends up on the depth chart, Allegretti's attitude is commendable. His readiness to adapt and compete exemplifies the qualities of a true leader and teammate. His journey is one to watch as the Commanders look to solidify their offensive line for the upcoming season.
