The Washington Commanders are gearing up for a pivotal 2026 NFL Draft, following a significant offseason overhaul. Renowned ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr. has weighed in, suggesting that the Commanders should set their sights on one of two standout Ohio State talents: Sonny Styles or Carnell Tate.
Kiper leans towards Styles as the ideal pick for Washington, especially given their defensive struggles against the run last season. With veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner departing in free agency, the Commanders are looking for fresh talent to bolster their defense. They've already brought in former Chiefs linebacker Leo Chenal, and adding Styles could create a formidable trio alongside Frankie Luvu.
“The Commanders couldn't stop anyone last season, and linebacker Bobby Wagner appears to be headed elsewhere as a free agent,” Kiper noted. “Bringing in [Sonny] Styles - my No. 6 prospect regardless of position - to team up with Frankie Luvu and new addition Leo Chenal makes some sense.”
If Styles isn't the choice, Kiper sees Carnell Tate as a strong alternative. Tate could inject some much-needed energy into Washington's passing game, which averaged just 184.1 yards per game last season. Pairing Tate with star receiver Terry McLaurin could provide the offensive spark the Commanders desperately need.
“I could also see Washington going with a receiver here, perhaps Carnell Tate, Styles' teammate at Ohio State,” Kiper added. “The Commanders' offense is looking for more juice opposite top wideout Terry McLaurin.”
Head coach Dan Quinn is under pressure as he heads into his third year with the team. Following a disappointing 5-12 season, Quinn revamped his entire coaching staff. The upcoming draft is crucial for Quinn, as it could define his tenure with the Commanders.
