Jonathan Allen's journey with the Washington Commanders seemed destined for an end, even after a taste of success leading to the NFC Championship game. His departure in the 2025 offseason was a move many saw coming. Allen quickly landed with the Minnesota Vikings, but it turns out the transition hasn't been as fruitful as expected.
After signing a lucrative deal with the Vikings, Allen's fit within Brian Flores' aggressive defensive scheme was highly anticipated. However, reports now suggest that Allen might be facing the chopping block once again.
According to Thor Nystrom of SKOR North, conversations at the NFL Scouting Combine hint that Allen's future in Minnesota is shaky at best. Despite the hefty contract that seemed to secure his spot, whispers indicate that Allen might not be on the Vikings' roster come 2026.
"One of the surprising things I've heard is, I thought Jonathan Allen was going to be on the team next year because of [his] contract, [but] I don't know that he will be. The team is going to look into different stuff.
Could they trade him? They're exploring, but it is well within play that they release Jonathan Allen.
I would've had his odds of being on the team next year, I would've had it pretty high coming into this week, and now I think it's pretty low," Nystrom shared.
The financial implications are significant. Allen's contract means he would count $23.86 million against the salary cap next season.
Releasing him would save just $6.53 million, leaving $17.33 million in dead money. A post-June 1 release could adjust these figures to $11.2 million saved and $12.66 million in dead cash.
If the Vikings decide to release him, it might be the most strategic financial move. Regardless, Allen's career trajectory seems to be in decline-a scenario that Commanders fans might have anticipated.
Once a dominant force on the interior, Allen's performance dipped in his final years with Washington, hindered by injuries and perhaps a lack of motivation. His struggles in Minnesota suggest deeper issues at play.
Facing the possibility of being cut for a second consecutive offseason, Allen finds himself at a crossroads. The future is uncertain, and this chapter in his career could be pivotal.
