Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season is already producing a little quarterback debate, and Jayden Daniels finds himself right in the middle of it.
Before Wednesday’s opener, Garrett Podell of CBS Sports released his Week 1 quarterback power rankings, and the Washington Commanders passer came in at No. 15.
That put Daniels behind Seattle’s Sam Darnold, who checked in at No. 14, and well behind New England’s Drake Maye, who landed at No. 6.
The timing made the ranking stand out even more. Wednesday’s season opener doubled as a rematch of February’s Super Bowl XLIX, with the Seattle Seahawks edging the New England Patriots 13-10.
Darnold left early with a hip injury, and Drew Lock took over from there. After Seattle fell behind 10-0 in the third quarter, Lock helped fuel 13 straight points to pull out the win.
The Seahawks also got a major assist from Maye, who threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter, including one in the end zone in the final seconds that wiped out New England’s chance to tie the game and force overtime.
Daniels’ placement reflects the rocky path of his follow-up season. After a historic 2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign, he was limited to 10 games in 2025 because of injuries. That leaves plenty to sort out in 2026, including a tough question about whether he can stay healthy behind a Laremy Tunsil-less offensive line.
There’s room to argue Daniels should be higher, but power rankings are subjective by nature. And in a league that lives by the “what have you done for me lately” rule, his spot makes a certain kind of sense.
Maye’s team reached the Super Bowl last season, so he starts at No. 6.
Daniels, coming off a year shortened by injuries, lands at No. 15.
As for the top spot, CBS gave No. 1 to Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, not Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes. Daniels, for his part, is likely less concerned with the rankings than with what happens against the Philadelphia Eagles.
