Jayden Daniels gets his next shot to steady the narrative when Washington walks into a Week 2 meeting with the Dallas Cowboys, and this one feels like a clean chance to answer some of the noise around his game.
His regular-season return last week was uneven. After taking only three snaps in the preseason, Daniels looked out of rhythm against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field and spent three quarters trying to find his footing.
Philadelphia’s defensive front made the first part of the night miserable for him, getting pressure early and squeezing Washington’s offense into a tight space. Still, he finished with a comeback push that showed why the Commanders believe he can lift them when he settles in.
That belief matters now more than ever. Daniels’ standing has dipped over the last year, in part because of the season he went through and in part because Caleb Williams and Drake Maye have surged since the 2024 NFL Draft.
Even so, Washington didn’t reach the NFC title game as a rookie by accident. The flashes were real then, and they were there again in the fourth quarter against Philadelphia.
There’s also a natural fit for him here. Daniels should be in a better position to operate against a Cowboys defense that just got carved up by New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart. Dallas allowed 28 points in that game, and there’s no obvious reason Daniels can’t attack in a similar way.
That puts plenty on the line for both sides. The Cowboys are coming off a Week 1 loss and are trying to protect their home opener.
Washington, though, has just as much urgency. Falling to 0-2 would leave the Commanders climbing uphill fast, and starting the season with two division losses would drop them to the bottom of the NFC East.
Head coach Dan Quinn’s team has the kind of matchup it should be able to use. The expectation here is that Daniels and the Commanders can get to at least 30 points, while defensive coordinator Daronte Jones’ group - solid for stretches in Philadelphia - is tasked with keeping Dak Prescott from answering back.
For Daniels, this is exactly the kind of game that can move the conversation again. After his historic first professional campaign, he was already being mentioned with some of the league’s best quarterbacks. Now, with Washington’s 2026 outlook tied to how well he handles nights like this, the Commanders need him to make the most of it.
