Jayden Daniels is heading into the 2026 NFL season with plenty of questions hanging over him, but former NFL head coach Eric Mangini thinks the Washington Commanders quarterback is being judged by a tougher standard than some of his peers.
On a recent episode of First Thing's First, Mangini pushed back on the idea that this is a true make-or-break moment for Daniels alone.
"I think it's a great quote," Mangini says. "And I think he's approaching it the right way.
Is this a make-or-break year for Caleb (Williams)? Is it a make-or-break year for Drake (Maye)?
Is it a make-or-break year for Bo Nix? Is it a make-or-break year for The Prince?"
The discussion centered on the third-year quarterbacks and the way a down season can be interpreted differently depending on who is involved. Mangini argued that Daniels' situation deserves more context, pointing to the quarterback's injury history and the roster around him.
"He was hurt, we're not talking about a full body of work," Mangini said in defense of Daniels. "He just lost his left tackle, he's on one of the oldest teams."
Mangini also brought up Washington's defensive struggles in 2025 and raised the possibility that Daniels could be asked to carry too much again this season. That, he suggested, would shape how people evaluate him if the Commanders are constantly playing from behind.
"I think there's things that go into the evaluation," said the former coach. "We should see some progress, but the progress is going to have to be viewed within the context of everything else that's happening around him."
Daniels will start answering some of those questions right away when Washington faces the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1, though one game won't settle the whole debate. The bigger picture will take shape over several weeks, and if Daniels stays healthy and the Commanders win, there is no doubt he would be in line for an extension this year.
The segment also made clear that Mangini is viewing Daniels' down season differently from the way others might. In his eyes, injury played the bigger role than performance alone. The conversation also touched on how Williams and Maye found success after coaching changes, while Daniels now has a new offensive coordinator of his own - something that could matter a great deal in his development.
