J.J. McCarthy Has Giants Expecting NFC East Title

J.J. McCarthy's impressive comeback attempt with the Giants has reignited concerns among Vikings fans over a trade they'd hoped to forget.

J.J. McCarthy gave Minnesota fans exactly the kind of Sunday they didn’t want to see.

In his first real action for the New York Giants - not counting a random gimmick package - the former Vikings quarterback nearly dragged his new team all the way back from a 24-point hole against the New Orleans Saints. New York was trailing by that margin with less than 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter when the Giants benched Jameis Winstion and handed the offense to McCarthy.

The first flashpoint was rough. On his fourth pass attempt, McCarthy was picked off by Saints cornerback Martin Emerson.

He shook it off fast.

On his next drive, McCarthy helped the Giants string together a six-play, 45-yard march that ended with a five-yard rushing touchdown from Tyron Tracy. New York then went for two, and McCarthy delivered by finding Isaiah Likely on the right side of the end zone.

After the Giants’ defense forced a 3-and-out, McCarthy got another shot and cashed it in for his first touchdown pass of the 2026 season.

That set up a tense finish. New York still trailed by seven and had one final chance to tie or win it in the closing minutes. McCarthy moved the offense all the way to the Saints’ 14-yard line, but with 12 seconds left, he took the snap on 4th-and-1 and threw incomplete into the back of the end zone, ending the comeback bid and sealing the win for New Orleans.

Still, the box score was enough to stir up the Vikings conversation all over again.

McCarthy finished with 243 passing yards, one touchdown, one interception and a 52.4 percent completion rate, plus 26 rushing yards. And even though he was on the field for only about 75 percent of the fourth quarter, his showing was enough to get Minnesota fans talking during the Vikings’ bye week.

A few of them were loud about it online, including this reaction: “I just wanted to see another game or two before calling him a bust, and a bunch of people deemed that to be an idiotic stance 🤷🏼‍♂️”

Another wrote, “If this is how he plays for the rest of the year, this team legit needs to win the SB or Teasley and KOC can both go.”

Bob “The BS Show” Sansevere added, “J.J. McCarthy just engineered two TD drives in under two minutes, with the second one a 24-yard TD pass. Why can't the Vikings find a QB like McCarthy?”

It’s still early, and the source of this story doesn’t pretend otherwise. There’s no final verdict on whether Minnesota made the right call by trading McCarthy to New York earlier this season. But Sunday’s performance absolutely gives fuel to the people in Minnesota who think the Vikings let something slip away.

And if the Giants stick with McCarthy, the next step could come quickly. Given how he played against the Saints, it wouldn’t be a surprise if New York names him the starter over Winston for Week 7 against the Houston Texans. If that happens, plenty of Vikings fans will be watching closely to see what McCarthy does next.

Jayden Daniels Faces A Huge Monday Night Test Washington Needed

Jayden Daniels is back in the lineup just in time for one of the toughest assignments on Washingtons schedule, a Monday night trip to face the undefeated 49ers at Levis Stadium. The matchup has San Francisco favored by 7.5 points, and plenty of analysts are leaning toward the home team, but Washington is still expected to make things interesting if Daniels can help steady an offense that has needed him back.

The Commanders are carrying some injury concerns into the game, which only adds to the challenge of keeping pace with a 49ers team that has looked complete on both sides of the ball. Still, there is some positive momentum around Washingtons preparation, and one offensive situation in particular could matter a lot in how this night unfolds. [Read more 🡒]

Commanders Face One Huge Offensive Question Before 49ers Showdown

The buildup to Sundays Commanders-49ers matchup has been shaped as much by the injury report as by the standings, with both teams carrying a long list of absences into Week 6. Washington already knows it will be without Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Marcus Mariota, Charles Omenihu and Javontae Jean-Baptiste, while San Francisco has its own heavy hits to absorb with Nick Bosa and Deebo Samuel ruled out and other players still in question.

For Washington, the biggest offensive swing may come down to Stefon Diggs, who is questionable with a hamstring injury after practicing on a limited basis. His status looms large for a Commanders offense that could use every available playmaker against a 49ers defense missing Bosa, even as San Francisco waits on a few more late-week decisions of its own. Giants Sit Atop An NFC East Mess That Just Got Worse

The NFC East has spent the last stretch looking less like a race and more like a weekly inventory of missed chances, and Washington is in the thick of it again. The Cowboys loss to the Packers added to the divisions recent slide, while the Commanders head into their matchup with the 49ers as underdogs, with the Giants sitting atop a messy standings picture that could still shift fast.

Washingtons next result carries more weight than just one game, because the divisions latest stumble has left every outcome tied to the larger scramble around it. A win would tighten things up and give the Commanders a path to climb, but another loss would only deepen the pileup at the bottom of the NFC East and keep the Giants in the safest spot for the moment.
