Washington Commanders fans might be feeling a bit antsy after the first day of legal tampering, but they can find some entertainment in a recent Atlanta Falcons move. It seems the Falcons have taken a gamble that Commanders supporters are all too familiar with.
Reports indicate that the Falcons have inked former Commanders first-round pick Jahan Dotson to a two-year, $15 million deal, with a hefty $10 million guaranteed. To put this in perspective, based on Dotson's output last season with the Philadelphia Eagles, Atlanta is shelling out $270,000 in guaranteed money per catch he made.
Commanders' Savvy Trade Pays Off
Dotson showed promise in his rookie year with Washington, snagging seven touchdowns in just 12 games. However, his performance quickly nosedived, prompting Commanders' GM Adam Peters to execute a shrewd trade, one that might be considered a masterstroke in recent franchise history.
Peters managed to convince Eagles GM Howie Roseman to part with a 2025 third-round pick and two seventh-rounders in exchange for Dotson and a fifth-round pick. That trade capital was pivotal in acquiring elite left tackle Laremy Tunsil from the Houston Texans.
Tunsil, who just penned a two-year extension with Washington after an All-Pro-worthy season, is set to protect quarterback Jayden Daniels' blindside for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, Dotson failed to live up to expectations in Philadelphia and was quickly moved on.
Despite some initial fan skepticism about Peters' free agency moves last offseason, transforming a declining asset into a cornerstone left tackle is a huge win for the Commanders' front office. Yet, the Falcons have opted to roll the dice on Dotson, offering a deal that far exceeds his market value.
Spotrac pegged Dotson's market worth at around $2.66 million annually, but Atlanta is paying triple that amount. Adding to the intrigue, the Falcons also signed Olamide Zaccheaus, another ex-Commanders receiver, who outperformed Dotson last year and seems like a better value.
It's almost amusing to see Dotson's cap hit surpassing those of stars like Malik Nabers, Tetairoa McMillan, Rome Odunze, Drake London, and Chris Olave. But when teams are desperate, they make bold moves.
With Dotson's recent performances, the Falcons are essentially betting on a $15 million lottery ticket that hasn't hit since 2022. Perhaps Dotson will have a resurgence similar to Wan'Dale Robinson, who went from a WR4 to a $78 million contract in two seasons. Regardless, Washington can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing this is one less issue to address, though they still need to bolster their receiving corps.
