Drake Jackson is making his return to the Washington Commanders in 2026, and he recently sat down with the local media to discuss his new contract and future with the team.
Jackson joined the Commanders in 2025 after being released by the 49ers due to a severe knee injury, specifically a torn patellar tendon. Despite this setback, he worked hard to get back on the field and managed to play in three games last season. This stint allowed the team to see his potential and paved the way for his return.
Aware of the numerous defensive signings made by GM Adam Peters, Jackson made it clear that he’s ready to adapt to the needs of new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones. "I can do whatever he needs," Jackson stated confidently. Whether it’s dropping back, rushing, or playing linebacker, he’s prepared to step up wherever he’s needed.
The injury has been a humbling experience for Jackson, and he recognizes that his NFL career might hinge on making the roster this year. His commitment to the team is unwavering, as he’s eager to contribute in any way possible.
Reflecting on his journey, Jackson expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play again. "I definitely didn't know I was going to be able to play football again... and God blessed me with a second chance," he shared.
Entering his age-25 season, Jackson stands at 6-4, 273 pounds and is set to be a key rotational edge rusher for the Commanders. Drafted by the 49ers in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, he’s now looking to make a significant impact in his fourth NFL season.
