The Commanders’ first real test of the season runs through the middle, and that means Daron Payne has to be the one setting the pace.
Washington is trying to avoid an 0-2 start against the Cowboys in Week 2, and the defensive line is where the matchup starts to tilt. Payne is the steady force up front, the longest-serving defender on the roster and the kind of presence that has stuck around through plenty of ups and downs. With Javon Kinlaw listed as questionable because of a back injury, Payne’s workload and importance only grow.
There was plenty to like about what Payne did in Week 1 against the Eagles, even in a loss. The box score didn’t jump off the page, but he lived in the backfield and consistently disrupted plays. If a few more of those pressures had finished as sacks, his day would have looked a lot louder.
That kind of disruption is exactly what Washington needs in Dallas. The Cowboys are without interior offensive lineman Tyler Smith, which leaves the left guard spot exposed.
Daronte Jones will know that, and Payne has the tools to attack it. He can get after Dak Prescott and make life harder in the pocket.
The fit matters, too. Payne looks comfortable in Washington’s 3-4 base defense, where he has a little more room to work as an end instead of getting bogged down inside at tackle. Even now, he still comes off the ball with real explosion, and once he wins first contact, he’s a tough assignment for almost any guard.
Of course, this is bigger than one player. But if Payne wins early and forces Dallas to deal with him inside, that pressure can ripple across the whole defense.
This is also a big year for Payne personally. His future was a major talking point this offseason, with some wondering whether Washington should trade or release him. Adam Peters didn’t go that route, keeping Payne on the roster but making it clear there would be no new contract before 2027.
Payne responded the right way. In his contract year, the 2018 first-round pick delivered 11.5 sacks and earned a Pro Bowl nod.
That kind of output is hard to repeat, and nobody should expect a carbon copy. Still, there are signs that this could be one of his strongest seasons in a while.
Kinlaw is expected to play, but even if he does, the South Carolina product may not be fully healthy. That leaves Washington leaning even more heavily on Payne.
If the Commanders are going to get their season moving against Dallas, their biggest names have to show up. Payne is one of the first ones who has to.
