That scrutiny has mostly come from the outside. The Commanders still believe in Quinn, and the veteran coach hasn’t lost the locker room. But there’s no hiding the reality that another stumble would make life much tougher, especially with a trip to face the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2.
That matchup brings its own edge. The Cowboys were beaten by the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football, and they’ll be eager to avoid starting their home opener with another bad result. There’s also the personal layer for Quinn, who previously served as Dallas’ defensive coordinator before taking over in Washington.
A single loss doesn’t wreck a season. An 0-2 start, though, would be a different story with the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks waiting in Week 3.
Washington was never expected to coast through this schedule, and the road ahead is packed with playoff teams and clubs on the rise before the bye week. But dropping two NFC East games this early would leave Quinn and the Commanders in a difficult spot.
The organization’s confidence hasn’t disappeared. Josh Harris is viewed as a patient owner, so an in-season move away from Quinn doesn’t appear likely. Still, if the Commanders want any real chance of giving him a fourth year in charge, last season has to become the exception rather than the rule.
There’s also been a firmer tone from Quinn this week, something that showed up in the public criticism of cornerback Mike Sainristil. That approach is part of the larger picture here: Quinn is asking for sharper results, and he’s not soft-pedaling the standards.
Washington has reason to believe it can attack Dallas. The Cowboys have defensive flaws, but Dak Prescott has produced heavily against the Commanders over his career, and the receiver pairing of George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb could create problems for a Washington cornerback group that already looks vulnerable.
So the question becomes simple: how hard are these players willing to fight for Quinn right now?
The Commanders showed some encouraging signs in Week 1 even in defeat. The defense was better, the offense finished strong, and the effort held up to the end.
That matters. But it won’t matter much if the results don’t start following.
For now, the alarm hasn’t gone off. But if Washington leaves Dallas empty-handed, the noise around Quinn will get louder fast.
