Dan Quinn Enters Washington Bye Week Under Growing Pressure

Two NFC East coaches face mounting pressure as they navigate a challenging season shaped by injuries and team performance woes.

Two NFC East head coaches are staring at the wrong kind of attention heading into Week 8, and both Dan Quinn and Nick Sirianni landed on CBS Sports’ latest hot-seat list after rough starts.

For Washington, the pressure keeps building on Quinn after a 1-4-1 opening and a stretch of questionable clock and game-management decisions that have only sharpened the scrutiny. The Commanders come out of their bye week on Sunday and get right back into the division race with a Week 1 rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles, who sit just ahead of them in the standings. Washington is still alive in the NFC East because the whole division has stumbled, but the margin for error is getting tighter.

The Eagles, meanwhile, are dealing with a mess of their own. Sirianni checked in at No. 5 on Bryan DeArdo’s list, and the case against him starts with the record: Philadelphia is 2-5 and already trudging through another disappointing season.

Injuries have made the job harder, with Jalen Hurts, DeVonta Smith, Dontayvion Wicks and Nolan Smith all missing Monday night’s 38-21 loss to the Cowboys. Saquon Barkley was available, but he faded in the second half as his hamstring remained an issue.

Still, the problems in Philadelphia didn’t begin with the injury report. The Eagles opened with two unimpressive wins, then got blown out in Week 3 by a Bears team that didn’t have Caleb Williams. Not long after that, the roster took another hit when Lane Johnson retired and Cam Jurgens was traded to Baltimore, leaving them without two-fifths of their starting offensive line.

That’s what makes Sirianni’s situation so precarious. He was already under fire after last season, the Eagles gave him another year, and now he’s dealing with a second straight season that has fallen well short of expectations. His status beyond this year is very much in doubt.

Quinn landed one spot higher at No. 4, and his heat has only intensified since Washington’s baffling clock management at the end of its Week 5 tie with the Giants. That game sat between two losses, leaving the Commanders at 1-4-1 before the bye.

The first-year shine from Quinn’s run in Washington is gone. The Commanders are 6-16-1 since their 2024 NFC Championship game run, and the recent loss of Terry McLaurin for the season only adds to the concern after he injured his knee in the Week 6 defeat to the 49ers.

There are still a few reasons for Washington to keep believing. Jayden Daniels is healthy again and looking more like the 2024 version of himself, rookie linebacker Sonny Styles has flashed as a possible rising star, and the NFC East gives everyone a path because every team in it has a losing record.

For now, though, the Commanders have the clearer lane to a rebound simply by virtue of Daniels being back. He gives Washington a chance in every game, and that alone keeps the picture from getting any bleaker than it already is.

Commanders Add Intriguing Edge Depth As Position Shuffle Continues

Washington added another name to its edge rotation by signing defensive end Kyle Kennard to the practice squad, a move that fits the kind of ongoing shuffle teams make as they sort out depth late in the season. Kennard arrives with some NFL experience already on his ledger, having appeared in five games after the Chargers took him in the fourth round of the 2025 draft.

It is also a reminder that the Commanders are still looking for useful pieces at a position where health and availability can change the picture quickly. Kennard had his playing time slowed by injuries before getting cut loose in Los Angeles, and Washington is betting there is still something to mine there as it keeps turning over options on the edge. Commanders May Be Heading Toward A Daron Payne Decision Fans Dread

Washingtons rough start and the shape of the division have pushed the Commanders into the kind of midseason conversation no team wants to have, with the trade deadline looming and the possibility that they could act like sellers. In that context, Daron Payne has emerged as a name worth watching. The defensive tackle remains one of the more prominent pieces on the roster, and with his contract situation adding another layer to the discussion, he is suddenly sitting at the center of a decision that could shape both the present and the near future.

CBS Sports analyst Jared Dubin recently listed Payne among his top 25 trade candidates, which only adds to the intrigue around what Washington might do before the deadline. If the Commanders decide they are more interested in draft capital than a short-term push, Payne becomes one of the clearest players who could draw attention. For a fan base that would rather see core talent stay put, the idea of moving him is an unsettling one, and it leaves this as one of the more uncomfortable storylines to follow over the next stretch. Jayden Daniels Just Became A Real Commanders Debate

Jayden Daniels second season has not matched the electric promise of his rookie year, and the reasons are as much about availability as performance. Injuries have limited his time on the field, which has only sharpened the conversation around how Washington should view its young quarterback as the team tries to build around him.

The debate now goes beyond weekly production and into bigger roster questions, with outside speculation already attaching itself to Daniels future and the looming contract picture. Minnesota has been mentioned in that swirl, and with no official decisions or transactions on the books, the Commanders are left with a familiar NFL tension: whether to stay patient with a talented quarterback or let the noise around him keep growing.
