The Washington Commanders finally gave the national media something new to chew on Sunday night, and the reaction was all over the map.
After Washington rolled past the Philadelphia Eagles 27-10 with 27 unanswered points, the team climbed in eight of the nine power rankings tracked this week. The only holdout was NFL.com, which somehow dropped the Commanders two spots despite the 17-point win. That kind of split-screen response is exactly why these weekly polls can be so entertaining: one outlet sees momentum, another sees very little change, and the same result gets interpreted three different ways.
Washington’s win pushed the team to 2-4-1 and snapped a skid that had stretched back to Week 3 against Seattle. It also sparked one of the bolder takes of the week from Sports Illustrated’s Conor Orr, who moved the Commanders to No. 22 and called them his favorite to win the NFC East.
That’s a strong declaration for a team sitting at 2-4-1, even if the Eagles win gave Orr a real reason to lean in. He also pointed to the connection between Daniels and Antonio Williams, and the rookie’s snap counts against Philadelphia support the idea that his role is growing.
The rest of the national reaction landed in a pretty wide range. Pro Football Talk bumped Washington up six spots, while Sports Illustrated raised the Commanders five.
CBS Sports put them at 27th, ESPN at 25th, NFL.com at 26th, Fox Sports at 25th, Yahoo Sports at 23rd, Pro Football Talk at 24th, The Athletic at 25th, and Walter Football had them all the way up at 17th. Put together, the Commanders checked in at an average ranking of No.
23.8, up from 26.2 last week.
ESPN took a different route than the usual ranking note and instead highlighted best in-season trades, using the example of Art Monk and Gary Muhammad. John Keim noted that Washington traded a fourth-round pick to Oakland for Muhammad after Monk was injured, and that in 10 games with Washington in 1984, Muhammad caught 42 passes for 729 yards and four touchdowns. ESPN’s blurb also noted that Washington’s offense still ranked third in points and ninth in yards that season, even without Monk, before Muhammad was released before the 1986 season.
CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco kept it simple: “Jayden Daniels won for the first time in a long time. They rallied to beat the Eagles as the offense showed life and the defense was better. Now here come the Rams.”
NFL.com’s Nick Shook acknowledged the win but didn’t read too much into it, writing: “Washington recorded a much-needed win over the lowly Eagles on Sunday night in a display that wasn’t pretty but counted the same as any other victory. It’s nice to see Treylon Burks find a role in this offense, and it’s good to watch Jayden Daniels pilot the unit effectively. It also didn’t tell me all that much about where this team stands at 2-4-1.”
Fox Sports’ Ralph Vacchiano was even less convinced, saying: “The Commanders scored 27 unanswered points to beat a division rival on Sunday night, and ordinarily that would be cause for celebration. But the team they beat is the ghost of the Philadelphia Eagles, and it’s not like the Commanders needed much of an effort to do it.
It certainly was a much-needed win for Dan Quinn, who miraculously managed to survive the bye week. He’ll need a lot more of those and a lot more from star QB Jayden Daniels, however, to keep his job after the season.
And there are too many injuries and holes in the Commanders’ lineup to expect that.”
Yahoo Sports’ Frank Schwab took a broader division view, writing: “Like everyone else in the NFC South and NFC East, other than the Eagles, the Commanders should feel like they have a shot to be division champions. The Commanders are flawed, without question, but sit just two games behind the Giants in the division. It’s not like New York is a lock to run away with it.
The biggest problem for the Commanders is the loss of receiver Terry McLaurin for the season. It leaves them thin at receiver, and the good news is there are a lot of veterans available at the deadline at various price points.
The Commanders should be interested. They also should be interested in improving a secondary that ranks 27th in passing yards allowed. - Frank Schwab”
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio offered only: “Backward Hat Energy.”
The Athletic’s Chad Graff and Josh Kendall focused on Daniels taking another hit and the physical toll of the season, writing: “The Commanders quarterback took a big hit from Nolan Smith on Sunday night that just added to what already has been a black-and-blue season. Daniels has only rushed for 33 yards (all on scrambles) in the last two weeks. If he’s not dynamic on the ground, he’s not the player Washington thought he was as a rookie, but that style of play is taking a toll.”
Walter Football was the most bullish of the bunch, placing Washington at No. 17 and noting: “It’s hard to believe that Jayden Daniels just won his first game of the year. I know he was out for a while, but it still feels like he probably should have won a game by now.
However, that apparently hadn’t happened. The win over Philadelphia was Washington’s first victory since Week 3 against Seattle, which feels like a million years ago.”
For now, the Commanders have one more chance to change the conversation when they face the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. That game should tell the national media a little more about how much weight to give the Eagles win.

Jaguars Suddenly Have A Brian Thomas Jr. Debate They Never Wanted
Brian Thomas Jr. looked like one of the Jaguars best young building blocks after a strong rookie debut, but the conversation around him has shifted in a hurry during the 2024 season. His production and playing time have both dipped, even as Jacksonvilles coaching staff and Trevor Lawrence have continued to back him, and the numbers now show him trailing other receivers on the roster in catches and yards.
That kind of slide is what naturally fuels the trade chatter, especially when a player still has enough name value to draw interest from around the league. Several teams are being floated as possible fits, and the idea of Jacksonville even listening says plenty about how quickly the discussion around Thomas has changed, even if nothing has been confirmed. Jayden Daniels Showed Washington Something Fans Will Love
Jayden Daniels did not hide his frustration Sunday night when Washingtons offense stumbled early, and that reaction ended up being part of the story. After a sluggish start, the Commanders quarterback was visibly bothered on the sideline, a sign of how much the opening stretch meant to him as Washington tried to settle into the game and avoid letting the night get away.
Dan Quinn later praised Daniels for the way he handled the moment and for taking ownership of the teams performance in real time. For a Commanders group that still had to fight back from an early deficit, it was a reminder that Daniels is already showing more than arm talent and poise. He is beginning to look like a quarterback willing to set a standard when things go sideways, which is exactly the kind of presence Washington wants leading a comeback. [Read more 🡒]
Commanders Trade Deadline Talk Just Got Real After A Telling Roster Shift
A quiet roster wrinkle from Washingtons latest game has pushed the trade-deadline conversation into sharper focus. Mike Sainristil did not play a defensive snap, and that kind of usage change naturally has people around the Commanders wondering whether general manager Adam Peters is thinking about more than just the next lineup card. With injuries and availability issues hanging over the interior offensive line, defensive tackle and running back spots, Washingtons needs are starting to look less like depth concerns and more like a real roster puzzle.
Peters has already shown a willingness to keep the roster fluid, and this is the kind of moment when that approach gets tested. The Commanders have multiple areas that could use help, which is why the deadline chatter has picked up around possible additions and the idea of moving a piece to fill a more pressing hole. Nothing is final yet, but the way Washington handled Sainristil in the most recent game has made the next move feel a lot more consequential. [Read more 🡒]
