The Commanders continue their search for a new defensive leader, and they’ve just brought in another experienced name for consideration: Teryl Austin.
Austin, who’s been the Steelers’ defensive coordinator since 2022, sat down with Washington’s front office as they evaluate candidates to reshape a defense that struggled to find consistency last season. Before taking over as DC in Pittsburgh, Austin served as the team’s senior defensive assistant and secondary coach from 2019 to 2021, helping mold a unit that consistently ranked among the league’s best in takeaways and pass defense.
This isn’t Austin’s first rodeo as a defensive coordinator. He’s previously held the title in both Detroit and Cincinnati, and his résumé includes years of experience coaching defensive backs across multiple NFL stops. That deep background in secondary play could be especially valuable for a Commanders team that gave up too many explosive plays through the air in 2023.
Washington’s list of defensive coordinator candidates is shaping up to be both deep and diverse. Alongside Austin, they’ve spoken with Seahawks pass game coordinator Karl Scott and Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.
Chiefs defensive line coach Joe Cullen and Bears defensive backs coach Al Harris have also been linked to the opening. Former Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon was in the mix as well.
Brian Flores, who interviewed for the role, is now off the table after agreeing to an extension with the Vikings.
For the Commanders, this hire is going to be a pivotal one. With a new era beginning in Washington, the team is looking for a defensive mind who can bring both scheme versatility and leadership to a unit that’s in need of a reset. Austin brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of developing defensive backs-traits that could make him a strong fit if the Commanders decide to go in his direction.
