Commanders Surge As Risky Reunion Talk Wont Fade

Despite a strong offseason with key signings, the Washington Commanders are still navigating speculation around a potential reunion with Trevon Diggs, weighing the risks of his inconsistent performance and injury history against his high potential.

The Washington Commanders have been making headlines this offseason, with General Manager Adam Peters signing 15 players to bolster the roster. However, the buzz surrounding a potential signing just won't fade away.

The Commanders have shaken up their cornerback lineup. Marshon Lattimore's release freed up $18.5 million in cap space, while Jonathan Jones headed to the Philadelphia Eagles, and Noah Igbinoghene joined the Super Bowl-winning Seattle Seahawks.

In response, Washington brought in Amik Robertson and Ahkello Witherspoon to join Trey Amos and Mike Sainristil. Yet, questions linger about whether this is enough, leading some to suggest a possible reunion between Trevon Diggs and head coach Dan Quinn.

Why hasn't Trevon Diggs landed in Washington yet?

Gary Davenport from Bleacher Report points out that while signing Diggs isn't a certainty, he might be the best option available at this stage of free agency. With Washington's cap space and need for a cornerback, Diggs' potential makes him an intriguing prospect.

"At this point in free agency, there are no sure things left, especially at a premium position like cornerback," Davenport notes. "But cap space isn't an issue in Washington, the team still needs help at corner, and there isn't a player at the position with a higher potential ceiling still looking for work than the 27-year-old."

However, Diggs' ability to return to his All-Pro form remains uncertain, making this a risky move that might not align with Washington's new defensive strategy.

Diggs thrived under Quinn's guidance, but things unraveled after he left for Washington. Injuries have also played a role in his decline. His short stint with the Green Bay Packers and the lack of interest in free agency add to the hesitation.

Dan Quinn knows Diggs well, having guided him early in his career. But this is now Daronte Jones' defense, and if Diggs doesn't fit into his scheme, the Commanders might explore other options.

The speculation around Diggs will persist as long as he's available. Yet, if there were real traction, the former Alabama standout would likely already be in Washington.

While anything is possible, a Diggs-Commanders reunion seems unlikely.
