His numbers in Washington back up the idea that he can steady the ship. As a Commander, he has completed 64% of his passes with 15 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 94.3 passer rating.
The Commanders are 0-2 and already dealing with division pressure, which makes this stretch feel especially urgent. Mariota doesn’t need to reinvent anything. He just needs to keep Washington functional and give the team a chance to stack wins until Daniels is ready to come back.
After the loss to Dallas, Mariota said the fit with the scheme is there.
“With as much experience as I’ve had, I feel comfortable,” Mariota told on-site reporters. “We’ve got a great crew.
Those guys didn’t blink at all, and I thought we did a good job of moving the ball in the second half. But yeah, I feel confident.
I feel comfortable. I really like what Coach Blough is doing.
I believe in this system and we’ll get this thing right.”
That’s the assignment now: keep Washington afloat, make the offense work, and buy time for Daniels.
