The Washington Commanders trimmed their tackle room on Tuesday, releasing veteran offensive tackle Foster Sarell just before their final preseason game.
Sarell had been added in March as a depth option, but he never made a strong enough push in training camp or preseason to stick. His path to the roster was always narrow, and the competition only got tighter once Washington’s tackle group filled out.
Sarell has been bouncing around practice squads since 2021, though he spent most of the last few seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers. From 2022 to 2025, he was around that program for a long stretch, even if the game action never came in big doses.
He appeared in every game in 2023, then played in 11 games in 2024. In 2025, that number dropped to six games and one start.
Over his final three seasons in Los Angeles, he also had very little work on special teams.
Washington’s tackle depth chart made Sarell’s challenge clear from the start. When he signed, Laremy Tunsil Jr, Brandon Coleman, Trent Scott, George Fant and Andrew Wylie were already in the room, leaving him buried on the pecking order. In the Commanders’ first unofficial depth chart, Sarell was listed as the fourth left tackle behind all three of those players.
With Tunsil injured and Sarell now gone, the Commanders are down to two tackles behind Coleman and right tackle Josh Conerly Jr.: Scott and Wylie. Coleman is expected to handle most of the work this season, starting with Washington’s opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sun.
