Jordan Magee’s push for a bigger role in Washington hit another wall almost immediately.
The Commanders have placed the third-year linebacker on injured reserve after he left Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles with a hamstring injury. That move means Magee will miss at least the next four games, another tough break for a player trying to build on the momentum he created last season.
Magee entered the year hoping to carry over a strong 2025? No - after appearing in all 17 games last season and starting eight, he looked like a player on the rise.
His first offseason in 2024 had turned heads before a knee injury that required surgery stopped that progress cold. This summer, though, the outlook seemed brighter again.
Washington added Leo Chenal and Sonny Styles to the linebacker group, leaving Magee in a rotational role with a chance to make his mark on special teams. He did flash in that area at Lincoln Financial Field before the hamstring issue shut him down again.
The timing is rough for the Commanders, too. Frankie Luvu’s status for Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys is also in doubt, which leaves Washington thin in the middle of its defense.
If Luvu can’t play, Styles and Chenal are the likely leads, with Kain Medrano as an unproven option who has more of a special-teams profile. Ale Kaho remains on the practice squad if the team needs another body.
For Magee, the next month is about getting healthy and trying to reset. Hamstring injuries can linger if they aren’t given enough time, and he now has a window to recover before he can return.
It’s a frustrating pattern for a player the coaching staff clearly likes. Magee has speed, athleticism and instincts, along with a physical edge that stands out. But availability matters, and the injury setbacks keep getting in the way of a fuller role.
There’s still belief in what he can become. The Commanders value him, and he’s the kind of player who fits Dan Quinn’s culture. Still, this latest setback delays whatever momentum he was building, and it leaves Washington waiting again for a linebacker who keeps showing promise, then running into bad luck.
