Commanders Suddenly Have A Bigger QB Question Than They Wanted

Marcus Mariota's seamless takeover in a high-pressure game led to his recognition as FedEx Air Player of the Week, showcasing his veteran poise and precision in a pivotal win.

Marcus Mariota’s turn in the spotlight ended with an award.

The Washington Commanders backup quarterback was voted FedEx Air Player of the Week after stepping in for the injured Jayden Daniels and delivering a composed, efficient performance against the Seahawks.

When Daniels went down in Week 2 vs the Cowboys, the concern around Washington was immediate. The return timeline for Daniels is still uncertain, but Mariota gave the Commanders exactly what they needed in the meantime: steadiness, control and a veteran presence that never looked rattled. From the first drive to the final whistle, he ran the offense with authority.

The passing numbers tell the story cleanly. Mariota completed 19 passes for 183 yards and 3 touchdowns without turning the ball over, finishing with a 110.0 passer rating. He stayed on rhythm, made smart decisions and kept the ball out of danger against a defense looking to capitalize on every mistake.

His biggest play, though, didn’t come through the air. Late in the fourth quarter, with Washington protecting a narrow lead, the Commanders faced a critical third down.

On a zone read, Mariota tucked the ball and took off, diving between two defenders for the first down. Both defenders had been blocked by TE John Bates, and the conversion all but sealed the win.

For Washington, it was the kind of moment that showed exactly why having a seasoned backup matters. Mariota didn’t just fill in. He managed the game, made the throws and delivered when the pressure was highest.

He also gives the Commanders another FedEx Air winner to celebrate. The last Washington player to earn the honor before Mariota was Daniels, who won it three times during his rookie season in 2024.

Commanders London Game Sparks A Fan Backlash The NFL Didnt Need

The NFLs London trip for the Commanders and Colts was supposed to be another showcase for the leagues international push, but the conversation around the game has shifted to pricing and patience. Tickets were cut after sales slowed, a move that immediately rubbed some fans the wrong way, especially those who bought in early and now feel they paid a premium for the same seat.

Andy Burrows, the NFLs 2025 international fan of the year, publicly took the league to task for putting television presentation ahead of the live experience, a message that is landing because this is not a one-off stop. The NFL already has multiple London games on the calendar through 2029, but the softer demand around this matchup has raised a familiar question about whether the leagues global strategy is keeping pace with what fans overseas actually want. Brandon Aiyuk Just Reignited Washingtons Strangest Offseason Story

Brandon Aiyuk has a way of keeping Washington in the conversation, even when he is nowhere near the building. The San Francisco 49ers receiver, who is currently on the reserve/left squad list, posted a video celebrating the Commanders first win of the season, adding another twist to a connection that has lingered all offseason.

Aiyuk has already made it clear he would like to play for Washington, and he has been spotted wearing the teams gear while also maintaining a friendship with quarterback Jayden Daniels. The wrinkle, of course, is that the Commanders moved on by signing Stefon Diggs, leaving Aiyuk on the outside of a roster picture that still feels oddly unfinished. [Read more 🡒]

Commanders Face Another Lineup Test Before London Kickoff

The Commanders are heading into their London trip with a little more roster churn than they probably wanted, as the club ruled out right guard Sam Cosmi and safety Nick Cross for Sundays game and said neither player will make the trip. On top of that, Washington added outside linebacker Charles Snowden to the practice squad, a small but notable move as the team keeps sorting through depth before kickoff overseas.

The transaction log also brought more movement at linebacker and in the backfield picture, with Marvin Jones Jr. landing on the practice squad injured list and Leo Chenal going on Reserve/Injured. Washington also made the signing of Austin Ekeler official, another reminder that the Commanders are still piecing together their lineup as they prepare for one of the more unusual weeks on the schedule.
