For Washington, the timing is impossible to ignore. After Philadelphia picked apart a secondary that was supposed to be steadier than it looked, general manager Adam Peters may need to think bigger than patchwork fixes.

Porter wants a new deal, and the cornerback market has been pushed higher several times already this offseason. Christian Gonzalez was the latest to reset it, and Washington is well aware of the contract decisions that come with that kind of player.
Peters may not love the financial ripple effect, especially with other extensions looming. But players in their prime are exactly the kind worth pursuing if there’s even a real chance they become available.
Pittsburgh also has plenty of money tied up in its defense. A new contract for Porter would only add to that burden and could force the Steelers to make sacrifices elsewhere. That makes this a tricky spot for them, and a trade before the situation gets messier could be the wiser move.
For Washington, though, the message is simple: if Porter is there for the taking, the Commanders should be ready to pounce.
