The Commanders’ pursuit of Stefon Diggs may not just be a matter of fit anymore. It could turn into a race.
Washington has been monitoring Diggs, and general manager Adam Peters is reportedly keeping tabs on the veteran receiver’s situation. But nothing concrete has materialized yet, and now the Kansas City Chiefs may be ready to complicate the picture.
According to reports out of Kansas City, Xavier Worthy injured his shoulder after falling awkwardly. The severity is still unknown, but the Chiefs already have another issue to manage with Cyrus Allen also headed for an extended stretch on the sidelines. That kind of double hit could push Kansas City toward adding another weapon for Patrick Mahomes.
And if that happens, Diggs could move to the front of the line.
For the Commanders, that creates a real problem. If they’re serious about bringing Diggs into their receiver room, they may have to move faster than they wanted. Kansas City may not look like the machine it once was, but with Mahomes expected to play Week 1, the Chiefs can still sell a clearer path to contention than Washington this season.

That matters for a player still chasing his first ring.
Washington’s wideouts did show some progress on Day 4 of practice. The group moved beyond mostly red-zone work and stretched the field more, and that change helped the offense look better. Still, the overall level hasn’t reached where it needs to be, and multiple reporters around the team have already started pushing Diggs as a logical answer.
If they can see the need, Peters almost certainly can too.
The question is what’s holding things up. Diggs may be asking for too much money, or the Commanders may be wary of the baggage that could come with the move if it goes sideways. Either way, other teams are watching, and Washington can’t afford to drag this out if Diggs is truly the target.
There’s also the argument that if he were a real option, he’d already be signed. Peters, though, seemed intent on taking in the full market once camp action got more serious. So far, the results have been uneven, and that could force Washington into a more aggressive approach if the offense doesn’t start trending upward.
Kansas City, meanwhile, won’t be shy. If Brett Veach and Andy Reid decide Diggs is the answer, they’ll move fast to get him. The Commanders haven’t shown that same urgency yet, but Peters can’t afford to let the opportunity slip away completely.
Diggs isn’t going to wait forever. If the Chiefs make their move, that might be a tough call for him to turn down.
