Commanders Stun Fans by Signing Former Rams WR to One-Year Deal

The Washington Commanders bolster their receiving corps by signing veteran wide receiver Van Jefferson, adding depth and competition ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft.

The Washington Commanders have been actively addressing their wide receiver needs this offseason, and they’ve made some notable moves to bolster their lineup. Despite missing out on Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs in free agency, the Commanders have reunited with Dyami Brown, a familiar face from their past drafts. But the real headline came with the addition of veteran wideout Van Jefferson on a one-year deal.

Jefferson, a seasoned receiver at 28, brings a wealth of experience from his college days at Ole Miss and Florida, and a solid NFL journey that began when the Los Angeles Rams picked him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. His career has seen him make stops with the Atlanta Falcons, Pittsburgh Steelers, and most recently, the Tennessee Titans.

Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 200 pounds, Jefferson is not just carrying the legacy of his father, former NFL receiver Shawn Jefferson, but also carving out his own path. His standout season came in 2021 with the Rams, where he started all 17 games, racking up 50 receptions for 802 yards and six touchdowns. Over his six-year career, Jefferson has amassed 166 receptions, 2,226 receiving yards, and 13 touchdowns.

For the Commanders, Jefferson's signing is all about adding depth and fostering competition within the squad. It’s a strategic move that doesn’t close the door on future acquisitions, such as the potential pursuit of 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk.

Additionally, this addition will likely influence Washington's approach as they prepare for the 2026 NFL Draft, where they hold the No. 7 overall pick. The Commanders are clearly positioning themselves to have a dynamic and versatile receiving corps ready for the upcoming season.
