The Washington Commanders’ receiver room has been one of the loudest offseason talking points, and for good reason: the club still hasn’t landed a true No. 2 target to line up opposite Terry McLaurin. That missing piece could end up being the offseason move that comes back to bite general manager Adam Peters.
Eva Geitheim of Sports Illustrated put the issue front and center, arguing that Washington may look back on this decision as the one that hurts most if the season doesn’t break the right way. She also noted that the picture could change fast if the Commanders add a veteran like Stefon Diggs before Week 1.
“The Commanders went into free agency with many, many needs, and hit on a number of them, from edge rusher to linebacker and the secondary. The area they did not address was securing a No. 2 receiver.
"The Commanders still have a No. 1 wideout in Terry McLaurin and could pursue free agent options such as Stefon Diggs, but they will go into 2026 lacking the ideal complement out wide."
That concern is easy to understand. Washington has McLaurin, but after that, the depth chart gets shaky in a hurry. There’s hope that offensive coordinator David Blough’s scheme can help cover some of the gaps, but that plan only works if one of the younger options or a reclamation project actually delivers.
Peters, though, has not exactly been standing still. He remains in constant evaluation mode, and this is one of the roster groups that will draw the most attention early in training camp. The Commanders also have room to maneuver, with $43.7 million in available cap space, so the front office has the flexibility to add another pass catcher if the right player becomes available.
They have already taken swings. Washington pursued Alec Pierce in free agency, but he stayed with the Indianapolis Colts.
The team then turned to Romeo Doubs, only for him to sign with the New England Patriots. Brandon Aiyuk has also been a popular name in speculation, though his social media activity has cooled some of the enthusiasm around that possibility.
For now, the Commanders’ best internal options include Van Jefferson Jr., Dyami Brown, third-round pick Antonio Williams, and undrafted rookie Jaden Bradley. Luke McCaffrey, Treylon Burks, and Jaylin Lane all bring upside, but none has proven much yet. Chig Okonkwo and Rachaad White should help in the passing game, though it remains to be seen whether that support is enough.
Washington has plenty riding on this season, but Peters is not going to force a move just to say he made one.
