Commanders Secure Rachaad White in Deal That Leaves Fans Buzzing

Rachaad White's team-friendly deal with the Commanders offers exceptional value and flexibility as the team rebuilds its backfield.

The Washington Commanders have made a strategic move by signing running back Rachaad White to a one-year contract. This comes on the heels of the team deciding not to extend an offer to Chris Rodriguez Jr., who quickly secured a two-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

With White now on board, the Commanders have two running backs under contract for the 2026 season, alongside Jacory Croskey-Merritt. However, given that Washington carried four running backs last season, it's likely we'll see more additions to their backfield before the season kicks off.

While former Commanders Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler are still free agents, their return to Washington seems improbable.

The Commanders have secured White on a highly favorable deal. According to Greg Auman of Fox Sports, the contract is valued at $2 million, potentially rising to $4 million with incentives.

For a 27-year-old running back boasting 2,656 rushing yards, 205 receptions, 1,450 receiving yards, and 25 touchdowns over four seasons, this is a steal. White's familiarity with quarterback Jayden Daniels, from their days at Arizona State, adds another layer of comfort and potential chemistry to the team.

To put this in perspective, Rodriguez's deal with the Jaguars is worth $10 million over two years, with $6.2 million guaranteed, despite having only 920 rushing yards in three seasons. Similarly, Keaton Mitchell signed a two-year deal with the Chargers for $9.25 million, with $5 million guaranteed, despite a market value of just over $1.5 million and 767 career rushing yards.

White's contract, therefore, represents excellent value for the Commanders, offering potential upside with minimal risk. His versatility in the passing game and willingness to engage in pass protection make him a valuable asset.

Importantly, White's signing does not preclude the Commanders from eyeing Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love in the upcoming NFL Draft. Unlike a splashy acquisition like Kenneth Walker III, White's addition keeps options open, allowing Washington to potentially bolster their backfield further with a promising draft pick.
