Commanders Re-Sign Key Player to Shake Up Crowded Backfield

Commanders bolster their offensive strategy with a crowded and competitive backfield, reshaping their roster for potential success.

The Washington Commanders are making strategic moves in free agency to reignite the spark they had a couple of seasons ago. Their latest play?

Bringing back a pivotal piece of their backfield. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Jeremy McNichols is re-signing on a one-year deal.

McNichols, who carved out a niche last season as a special teams ace and versatile back, racked up 221 rushing yards and a touchdown. In the air, he snagged 25 receptions for 196 yards. His ability to switch gears will be crucial as the Commanders look to deploy him alongside a refreshed running back lineup.

Just a day before McNichols' return, the Commanders added Jerome Ford from the Cleveland Browns on a one-year contract. While Ford's numbers last season were modest-73 rushing yards-his standout performances in 2023 and 2024 suggest untapped potential.

Rachaad White is another exciting addition, reuniting with his former Arizona State quarterback, Jayden Daniels. White expressed enthusiasm about joining the Commanders, highlighting the chance to play with a close friend as a major draw.

"Obviously one of my top choices," White shared. "1st choice? Probably not, but I'm happy with the decision I made.

I'm grateful to be here."

With these moves, the Commanders are setting up a dynamic backfield that promises to provide Daniels with a wealth of options. The key will be maintaining health, a challenge that plagued them last season. If they can keep everyone on the field, this offense could be poised for a comeback.
