Three weeks into NFL free agency, the Washington Commanders have been busy shaping their 2026 roster under the guidance of general manager Adam Peters. And what a haul they've managed to secure.
Headlining the new arrivals are edge rushers Odafe Oweh and K'Lavon Chaisson, tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo, and running back Rachaad White. The Commanders also welcomed back familiar faces in defensive tackle Tim Settle Jr. and wide receiver Dyami Brown, adding depth where it counts.
Peters took a strategic approach this time, steering clear of high-profile names. Instead, he focused on emerging talents who promise to deliver more than their contracts suggest.
These are players who might not always make the highlight reel but will undoubtedly impact the game. Among them, Leo Chenal stands out as a potential gem.
Leo Chenal: A Versatile Asset for Washington's Defense
Hailing from the Kansas City Chiefs, Chenal brings a versatile skill set to the Commanders. In a chat with Full Command's Bryan Colbert Jr., the Wisconsin alum shared his excitement about joining Washington.
"Whether I can be in the middle of the field off the ball, a weak side linebacker, whether I need to be on the ball... whatever it is, I can do it. (Washington) was very encouraging and welcoming of that, and that made it very attractive."
Over four years in the league, Chenal has fought hard for his spot on a Super Bowl-level defense, contributing not just on defense but also on special teams. Whenever called upon, he's made his presence felt.
In Washington, Chenal is expected to start alongside Frankie Luvu and Jordan Magee. However, his role might see him moving around the field, serving as a crucial utility player in Daronte Jones' defensive scheme, especially if the team leans more on 3-4 sets.
Chenal’s open-mindedness and positive attitude are his biggest assets. He understands his role in Washington and is ready to do the little things that make a big difference. While he might not be an All-Pro, his contributions could be invaluable.
Chenal's value to the Commanders could be immense. If he delivers on his promises, Washington will have secured both a contract steal and a fan favorite.
