Commanders Mourn All-Pro Tre Johnson After Sudden Death at 54

Beloved former Washington lineman Tre' Johnson is remembered after his sudden passing at 54 during a family trip.

The Washington Commanders community is mourning the loss of former offensive lineman Tre’ Johnson, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 54 while on a family vacation. Johnson’s wife, Irene, confirmed the news on social media, sharing that he had recently been dealing with health issues.

Johnson was more than just a standout on the field-he was a devoted father, a passionate supporter of his children’s athletic pursuits, and a man who brought the same intensity to family life that he once brought to the trenches of the NFL. “Tre’ lived for his kids’ sports activities,” Irene wrote. “He supported them through every practice and game until he took his last breath.”

Drafted 31st overall in the 1994 NFL Draft out of Temple University, Johnson quickly carved out a role on Washington’s offensive line. He appeared in 93 NFL games over the course of his career, most of them in the burgundy and gold. After a short stint with the Cleveland Browns in 2001, he returned to Washington for the 2002 season, bringing his career full circle.

Johnson was known for his physicality and presence on the line-tough, reliable, and respected in the locker room. But those who knew him off the field remember a man who carried that same strength into his personal life. Whether it was sharing his love of French Bulldogs or hitting the open road on his motorcycle with friends, Johnson lived with passion and purpose.

After hanging up his cleats, Johnson didn’t stray far from his roots. He became a history teacher in the Washington, D.C., area, continuing to impact young lives in a different but equally meaningful way. He and Irene raised four children together, building a life centered around family, education, and community.

Tre’ Johnson’s legacy stretches well beyond the football field. He was a protector in every sense-on the offensive line, in the classroom, and at home. His sudden passing leaves a void not just in the Commanders family, but in the lives of those he touched every day.
