The Washington Commanders may have found the former Jayden Daniels teammate who actually changes the picture.
While the noise around San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk keeps swirling, Washington has been busy with something it can control: reshaping its running back room. The move that stands out is Rachaad White, who signed a one-year, $2 million deal and has already started turning heads during the team’s early offseason work.
White’s fit goes beyond familiarity, though that part matters too. He and Daniels were a productive backfield tandem at Arizona State, and that connection is now in place again in Washington. The Commanders are betting that chemistry can carry over once the games count.
The early returns have been encouraging. White has shown enough in offseason work to spark real buzz, and there’s a path for him to become a central piece of the offense even if the backfield ends up being split. His value is obvious: he can catch the ball out of the backfield, create explosive plays, and bring a skill set Washington did not have last season.
That’s why this signing feels bigger than a standard depth move. White already has 4,106 yards from scrimmage and 25 touchdowns in four seasons, and that production makes him look like more than a simple stand-in. He could be a ready-made replacement for Austin Ekeler, and the upside goes beyond that.
Jacory Croskey-Merritt is still in the mix and still has a chance to earn a role. He has bulked up this offseason to improve as a pass blocker, which will matter if he wants to lock down a longer future. But for now, White appears to have the edge.
The Aiyuk situation has only sharpened the contrast. After throwing shade at Daniels on social media, he seems to have cooled any possibility there, and what once looked like an intriguing offseason idea no longer does. White, by comparison, brings a more focused approach.
General manager Adam Peters made plenty of notable additions in his third offseason, but White may end up being the best value of the bunch. If the momentum from the offseason carries into the regular season, Washington may have landed a far more important piece than it first looked like.

Commanders Camp Could Force A Defining Jayden Daniels Decision
Training camp has a way of turning roster questions into roster decisions, and for the Commanders, the conversation around Jayden Daniels is already getting louder. ESPN analyst Jason McCourty said on First Take that Washington needs to add another dynamic weapon if Daniels is going to have a real chance to elevate the offense and keep the team competitive in the NFC, a reminder that the passing game still has to prove it can do more than lean on Terry McLaurin.
Adam Peters and Dan Quinn now have to sort through a receiving group that still feels unfinished, with the front office weighing whether to make a move or trust the current group to grow into the job. The options on the board include outside help and internal patience, and the way Washington handles that choice in camp could say plenty about how aggressively it plans to build around Daniels right now. Adam Peters Just Made Another Telling Move Behind The Scenes
The Commanders have continued to reshape their front office in quiet but meaningful ways, and the latest move adds another familiar voice around Adam Peters. After Scott Fitterer departed for Athletes First, Washington brought in a new senior personnel executive with a background that should fit the way Peters likes to build a staff.
What makes the addition notable is the connection behind it. The two had already worked together in San Francisco, giving Peters another evaluator he knows well as Washington keeps refining its personnel operation. It also comes after a recent shakeup in Minnesota, where Washingtons path opened up and created an opportunity for the Commanders to move quickly. [Read more 🡒]
