Commanders May Be Heading Toward A Daron Payne Decision Fans Dread

In the midst of a challenging season and looming trade deadline, the Washington Commanders weigh the possibility of shopping Daron Payne to secure future assets.

The Commanders’ record has them sitting in a strange spot with the NFL trade deadline still two weeks out. At 1-4-1, Washington looks like a team that should be selling.

But the NFC East hasn’t exactly set a terrifying standard, either. The Giants are in first place at 5-2-1, yet they’re hardly running away with anything, and the two teams will see each other again in a few weeks after tying in Week 5.

That leaves Washington with a real decision: hold steady, make a push, or start cashing in pieces with value.

Around the league, teams have already started moving. On Tuesday, the Colts sent eight-time Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to the Seahawks and three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the 49ers. Since the calendar turned to October, the Steelers dealt disgruntled cornerback Joey Porter Jr. to the Cowboys, the Eagles moved guard/center Cam Jurgens to the Ravens and the Cardinals shipped wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. to the Texans.

If the Commanders decide to go the seller route, one name stands out above the rest: defensive tackle Daron Payne.

Payne, Washington’s first-round pick in 2018, is now in his ninth NFL season and still only 29. Durability has been a major part of his value; he has missed just three games in his career. The Commanders didn’t show much urgency this offseason to work out an extension with him, content instead to let him play through the rest of his contract.

CBS Sports’ Jared Dubin recently included Payne among his top 25 trade candidates, noting: “The Commanders are going nowhere and Daron Payne is in the final year of his contract. His $16.4 million base salary is high but not prohibitive to a trade.

He's still a quality run defender, even if he doesn't give you that much in the way of pass-rush juice these days. The Commies would be wise to get something for him before he leaves in free agency next offseason.”

If Washington has already decided Payne won’t be part of the future, the timing makes sense to move him now. Even if the Commanders win the next two games, the argument for dealing him doesn’t really change. And with a 2027 NFL Draft that’s expected to be strong, extra draft capital could come in handy.

Commanders Add Intriguing Edge Depth As Position Shuffle Continues

Washington added another name to its edge rotation by signing defensive end Kyle Kennard to the practice squad, a move that fits the kind of ongoing shuffle teams make as they sort out depth late in the season. Kennard arrives with some NFL experience already on his ledger, having appeared in five games after the Chargers took him in the fourth round of the 2025 draft.

It is also a reminder that the Commanders are still looking for useful pieces at a position where health and availability can change the picture quickly. Kennard had his playing time slowed by injuries before getting cut loose in Los Angeles, and Washington is betting there is still something to mine there as it keeps turning over options on the edge. Jayden Daniels Just Became A Real Commanders Debate

Jayden Daniels second season has not matched the electric promise of his rookie year, and the reasons are as much about availability as performance. Injuries have limited his time on the field, which has only sharpened the conversation around how Washington should view its young quarterback as the team tries to build around him.

The debate now goes beyond weekly production and into bigger roster questions, with outside speculation already attaching itself to Daniels future and the looming contract picture. Minnesota has been mentioned in that swirl, and with no official decisions or transactions on the books, the Commanders are left with a familiar NFL tension: whether to stay patient with a talented quarterback or let the noise around him keep growing. Commanders Fans Want Big Moves But Washington Faces A Hard Reality

The Commanders would love to be part of the big-swing conversation, especially with a veteran guard like Quenton Nelson suddenly on the move. But Washingtons shaky season and tight financial picture have made that kind of splash difficult to justify, even before the market starts to get crowded. General manager Adam Peters has taken the cautious route so far, and for a team still trying to stabilize itself, restraint has been the more realistic approach than chasing a headline.

Washingtons next few games could end up shaping whether that changes before the trade deadline. If the Commanders can string together a meaningful push, the front office may have a better case for being aggressive. If not, the hard reality is that the kind of upgrade fans are hoping for may remain out of reach, with the teams bigger roster and cap questions still looming over every decision. [Read more 🡒]
