The Rams may be on the verge of getting a huge piece of their defense back at just the right moment. Myles Garrett is trending toward activation from Injured Reserve and could be available Sunday when Los Angeles visits the Washington Commanders in Week 9.
Garrett has been working back from knee surgery that sent him to IR after the season opener, and the signs this week have pointed in the right direction. He returned to practice after missing the Rams’ previous games, and the latest update suggests the team is preparing to have him back in uniform for the road matchup.
#Rams star Myles Garrett, working his way back from knee surgery that landed him on Injured Reserve, is on track to be activated ahead of Sunday’s game at the #Commanders, per me and @MikeGarafolo. Garrett has practiced all week and all indications point towards him playing. A big lift.

Los Angeles opened Garrett’s 21-day practice window this week, giving the team a chance to evaluate where he stands before deciding whether he’s ready to come off IR. Sean McVay said the process would be handled day by day, and Garrett’s progress has backed that approach up. He was listed as a limited participant in Thursday’s practice, which matters because he had not practiced since the season opener.
The final hurdle is the official activation, but everything around the situation is pointing toward a return.
That would be a major boost for a Rams defense that has gone without one of its top playmakers for much of the season. Garrett brings another edge threat and adds real punch to the front against Washington. The Rams made a major investment to bring him in, so getting him back on the field carries obvious weight for a team with big expectations.
Of course, there’s a difference between being cleared to play and being fully back to his usual level after knee surgery and a long absence. The Rams will want to be sure he’s physically ready before throwing him into game action.
Even so, this is about as encouraging as it gets for Los Angeles heading into Week 9. Garrett is trending toward activation, and all indications point to him playing Sunday against the Commanders.

Commanders Face A Brutal Test With Their Offense Under Pressure
The Rams arrive in Week 9 with some momentum, having bounced back from an earlier loss with two straight wins as they try to push their record above .500. For Washington, the timing is tricky. The Commanders are coming off a win, but the bigger picture still shows a team with a losing record and a roster dealing with injury issues, which makes this matchup feel like a real measuring stick for where the offense stands right now.
Los Angeles brings a balanced challenge, and the matchup leans into the areas where the Rams have looked most capable lately. They have shown advantages both on the ground and through the air against a Washington defense that will have to hold up under pressure for four quarters. With the betting market backing the Rams, the Commanders are left needing a cleaner, more efficient offensive outing than the one they can afford to waste. [Read more 🡒]
Commanders Suddenly Have A Short-Week Roster Squeeze Before Rams Game
Washingtons short week is already turning into a roster-management test before the Rams arrive, with the receiver room taking on some early wear and tear. Treylon Burks missed both practices because of a foot injury, while Dyami Brown was limited with a calf issue, leaving the Commanders to juggle health and availability as they try to get through a quick turnaround.
The moves on the transaction wire showed how tightly things are being managed, with Robert Henry Jr. activated and Ricky Barber moved onto the active roster as Washington keeps patching together depth. The Rams are dealing with their own injury concerns and roster shuffling, including promoting kicker Joshua Karty, so both sides are heading into the matchup with more questions than theyd like for a game that is coming up fast. Commanders Cannot Afford To Reopen The Brandon Aiyuk Drama
Brandon Aiyuks situation is back in the spotlight as he applies for reinstatement with the NFL after the dispute that landed him on San Franciscos reserve/left squad list. He is expected to report to the 49ers facility, but there is still no clear answer on whether he actually wants to play for them again or whether the team wants him back, which keeps the whole matter hanging over the league a little longer.
For Washington, the important part is simpler: the Commanders already moved on during the offseason and should resist any temptation to reopen that door now. The receiver room has been filled out since then, and with Antonio Williams, Stefon Diggs and Treylon Burks in place, the club has little reason to revisit a drama it already chose to leave behind.
