Commanders May Be Forced Into A Deadline Move Fans Didn't Expect

As the NFL trade deadline approaches, several teams eye the possibility of acquiring Jerry Jeudy while the Browns weigh their commitment to keeping him.

The Cleveland Browns may not be looking to move Jerry Jeudy right now, but that hasn’t stopped the trade market from circling.

Cleveland is 5-2 heading into a Week 8 trip to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers, and the team’s current posture is clear: it is not trying to sell before the November 10 deadline. Even so, Jeudy is the kind of player who could attract attention if the Browns’ stance changes. Moving him would also send a pretty blunt message about a team that’s winning games and trying to stay in the hunt.

If the Browns do get pushed into a deal, there are a few teams that could make the kind of offer that gets their attention.

The Los Angeles Rams are one of the obvious fits. Davante Adams is dealing with an injury, and Puka Nacua has a history of injuries, which puts the Rams on the list of teams expected to chase receiver help.

Matthew Stafford likes to push the ball downfield, and Jeudy has a reputation for getting open on longer routes. He may not bring the physical style the Rams usually want at the position, but he would give them another useful piece, especially when Adams and Nacua are both available.

The Kansas City Chiefs also stand out. Tyquan Thornton’s injury made their receiver need even more urgent, and the issue was already there before that.

Patrick Mahomes had been leaning on Thornton as a downfield option, and that’s gone now after Thornton’s gruesome injury a few weeks ago. Kansas City has already been tied to several receivers, including Brian Thomas Jr. and Josh Downs, so it would not be surprising if Brett Veach checked in on Jeudy too.

Then there’s Washington. The Commanders are 1-4-1 entering Week 8, so they don’t look like a classic deadline buyer at first glance.

But with the Giants and Eagles using backup quarterbacks and the Cowboys’ defense struggling, there’s at least a case that the division is still there to be grabbed. Washington also just lost Terry McLaurin to injury against the 49ers, and the receiver room was already a concern.

That injury makes an upgrade feel close to necessary, even with Treylon Burks and Antonio Williams set for bigger roles and Stefon Diggs still in the mix.

Commanders Suddenly Need Unproven Help In Their Biggest Test Yet

The Commanders are heading into their Week 8 matchup with Philadelphia in a far different spot than they expected, with injuries forcing the roster to absorb some serious losses on both sides of the ball. The absence of Daron Payne leaves a major hole up front, while the offense also has to move on without Terry McLaurin, a setback that changes the look of the passing game and puts even more pressure on the rest of the lineup.

Against the Eagles, Washington will need a handful of less-established contributors to take on bigger jobs than anyone likely planned a few weeks ago. Antonio Williams, Charles Omenihu, Sonny Styles, Sam Cosmi and Rachaad White are among the players now being asked to do more, and how they handle those expanded responsibilities could go a long way toward determining whether the Commanders can stay competitive in one of their toughest tests of the season. Terry McLaurins Future In Washington Suddenly Feels Far Less Certain

Terry McLaurins long-term place in Washington looked secure when he signed a three-year extension in 2025 worth more than $96 million, with nearly $45 million guaranteed. But after a season-ending knee injury in 2026, the picture around the Commanders top receiver has changed in a hurry, and the team now has to weigh both his health and the realities of a contract built around availability and production.

McLaurin will miss out on some of the incentives and bonuses tied to playing time and performance, and that only adds another layer to a situation that already feels more complicated than it did a year ago. Washington could look at restructuring the deal, or it could make roster decisions with an eye toward where McLaurin stands physically and how the locker room looks as leadership continues to evolve. Commanders Have No Excuse To Waste This Eagles Opportunity

A bye week gave Washington extra time to reset before a Week 8 trip to Philadelphia, and the timing could hardly be better for a team trying to make a statement in the division. The matchup brings a familiar set of priorities into focus for the Commanders: slow down the Eagles on the ground, get their own rushing attack moving, keep Jayden Daniels upright and avoid giving away possessions in a game that figures to hinge on field position and execution.

The opening is there because Philadelphia is not the same team Washington saw earlier in the year, and the ripple effects have changed the way this game should be approached. With the Eagles dealing with major changes up front and at quarterback, the Commanders have a chance to turn a tough road test into a meaningful NFC East swing, but only if they play clean football and take advantage of an opponent still adjusting to those losses.
