The Commanders are heading into training camp with a receiver room that still looks unfinished, and the next week may tell the story of whether Washington plans to act on that.
For most of the offseason, the team has been tied to big names at wideout. Alec Pierce surfaced as a possible fit.
Stefon Diggs has been floated as a return to the DMV. Brandon Aiyuk has also been part of the conversation, though that situation appears unlikely to move anywhere right now.
The need is easy to see from the current roster. Terry McLaurin is the only clearly proven option.
Dyami Brown is back, but his role is limited to being an occasional deep threat. Rookie Antonio Williams has shown promise, but the Commanders would rather not lean too hard on a first-year player.
That uncertainty has kept the receiver market in focus, and ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler added more fuel Monday during an appearance on "The Kevin Sheehan Show."
"It's tough, you have a fairly young roster, so you don't want to just get 30-year-old retreads," said Fowler. "I do think, in the next week, some of their plans will crystallize, because they have to."
Fowler also said he had spoken with people around the team earlier this offseason about the receiver room and was told Washington was waiting until training camp. With camp starting Wednesday, the clock is now ticking on any possible move.
Diggs remains the top free agent name still out there, but Fowler also mentioned Keenan Allen and Tyreek Hill as other possibilities.
"I still think Keenan Allen could be a viable option... Tyreek Hill's not close to playing right now, but he will be ready at some point," Fowler continued.
Any of those three would change the look of the Commanders’ receiver group. Diggs stands out as the cleanest fit because of his DMV ties and his history of being a dependable target for young quarterbacks. However it plays out, this is a situation that should come into focus soon.
