The Washington Commanders are gearing up for a pivotal 2026 NFL Draft, with a clear focus on addressing key weaknesses following a major offseason shake-up. ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. has pinpointed two standout Ohio State prospects, Sonny Styles and Carnell Tate, as potential game-changers for the team.
Kiper is particularly keen on Sonny Styles for the Commanders, especially given their struggles against the run last season. With veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner moving on in free agency, Styles could be the perfect addition to bolster the defense. The Commanders have already added former Chiefs linebacker Leo Chenal, and Styles would slot in seamlessly between him and Frankie Luvu, forming a formidable linebacking trio.
"The Commanders couldn't stop anyone last season," Kiper noted. "With Bobby Wagner likely gone, bringing in Sonny Styles - my No. 6 prospect overall - alongside Frankie Luvu and new addition Leo Chenal makes a lot of sense."
If Styles isn't the choice, Kiper suggests Carnell Tate as another strong option. The Commanders are in dire need of more firepower in their passing game, having averaged just 184.1 passing yards per game in 2025. Tate, with his dynamic playmaking ability, could provide the spark they need alongside star receiver Terry McLaurin.
"I could see Washington opting for a receiver here, perhaps Carnell Tate," Kiper wrote. "The offense needs more juice opposite top wideout Terry McLaurin."
With head coach Dan Quinn entering a critical third season, the pressure is on to turn things around after a disappointing 5-12 record last year. The upcoming draft is crucial, and Quinn's future with the team may hinge on the decisions made in this draft. It's a make-or-break moment for the Commanders, and the right picks could set them on a path to success.
