Commanders Linked to Game-Changing Trade That Could End Safety Woes

Could a strategic move for Pro Bowl safety Minkah Fitzpatrick finally resolve the Commanders' defensive woes?

When it comes to NFL trades, Adam Peters has made a name for himself as a general manager who isn't afraid to shake things up. While he's had more successes than failures, Washington Commanders fans are curious if he'll stick to his usual playbook or try something different this offseason.

One NFL analyst, however, sees potential for another bold move, suggesting a trade that could bolster the Commanders' secondary under new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones.

With only six picks in the 2026 NFL Draft and just two in the first four rounds, the Commanders face a challenge. Peters is unlikely to part with the No. 7 pick, so any trade would require some clever maneuvering or finding a bargain.

Enter Minkah Fitzpatrick. CBS Sports analyst Bryan DeArdo believes that if the Commanders re-enter the trade market, they should consider reaching out to the Miami Dolphins about their five-time Pro Bowl safety. Fitzpatrick, despite a slight dip in performance last season, still has plenty to offer, and Washington could be an appealing destination given their recent NFC title game appearance and the presence of defensive-minded head coach Dan Quinn.

The Dolphins are in rebuild mode under new leadership, having already released stars like Tyreek Hill and Bradley Chubb. Reports indicate Miami is open to offers for Fitzpatrick, who continues to be a top-tier player with several prime years left.

Jones' defense demands versatile, physical players, and Fitzpatrick fits the bill perfectly. Washington also has the financial flexibility to take on the final year of his contract.

However, Fitzpatrick might seek a contract extension, adding a layer of complexity to any potential deal. The Dolphins won't let him go easily, especially amid their roster overhaul.

While a trade seems unlikely for the Commanders this offseason, Peters could still surprise us. After a disappointing five-win season, there's a need for strategic planning and stability. Yet, if Peters decides to make a move, adding a talent like Fitzpatrick could be a game-changer for Washington.
