The Washington Commanders have been on a mission this offseason to inject youth and speed into their roster. With over two weeks of free agency behind us, they've signed more than a dozen players, aiming to revamp their 5-12 squad from last season.
Addressing their most pressing needs, the Commanders focused heavily on edge rusher and wide receiver positions. They made a splash by signing Odafe Oweh to a hefty $100 million contract, while also bringing in K'Lavon Chaisson and Charles Omenihu on one-year deals. On the receiving end, Dyami Brown and Van Jefferson joined the ranks, adding depth to ensure the team doesn't rely solely on players like Chris Moore, Robbie Chosen, and River Cracraft.
While Brown and Jefferson are solid additions, they’re not expected to start alongside Terry McLaurin. The Commanders aggressively pursued Alec Pierce, who ultimately re-signed with the Colts, and were in the mix for Romeo Doubs before he opted for the Patriots. After these pursuits, GM Adam Peters decided to bring back Brown, originally a third-round pick in 2021, and Jefferson, a former second-rounder from the Rams.
Looking ahead, the Commanders' focus shifts to the 2026 NFL Draft. With the No. 7 overall pick, they might target a wide receiver like Carnell Tate, Makai Lemon, or Jordyn Tyson. Alternatively, they could wait and seek a receiver on Day 3 of the draft.
Recently, Washington was spotted at Oregon's pro day, showing interest in Ducks receiver Malik Benson, according to NFL draft analyst Tony Pauline. Benson had one-on-one meetings with the Commanders, as well as the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers. He’s also lined up for a workout with the Buffalo Bills.
While Benson may not immediately fill the starting receiver role, his speed is undeniable. Clocking in at 4.37 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the 2026 NFL Combine, the 6-foot, 189-pound receiver has an impressive track record.
Starting his journey at Hutchinson Community College, he moved to Alabama in 2023, then to Florida State in 2024, and finally found his stride at Oregon in 2025. There, he caught 43 passes for 719 yards and six touchdowns, averaging nearly 17 yards per catch.
A former high school sprinter, Benson could quickly become a deep threat, complementing McLaurin and adding a new dynamic to the Commanders' offense.
