Commanders Linked to 3-Time All-Pro in Offseason Shake-Up

The Washington Commanders are poised to pursue All-Pro Minkah Fitzpatrick to bolster their struggling secondary.

The Washington Commanders find themselves in a crucial offseason, aiming to revamp a defense that struggled significantly in 2025. With free agency approaching and the No. 7 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Commanders have both the financial flexibility and draft capital to make impactful changes.

While the need for an edge defender is clear, the secondary also requires attention. Cornerbacks Mike Sainristil and Trey Amos are under contract, and the safety group includes Quan Martin, Jeremy Reaves, Will Harris, Tyler Owens, and Percy Butler. Reaves, Owens, and Butler shine on special teams, with Reaves also stepping up defensively when needed.

Strengthening the cornerback and safety positions is a priority for 2026. An intriguing opportunity could arise with Miami Dolphins' defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick potentially becoming available.

The 29-year-old, a decorated three-time first-team All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowler, might be on the move as the Dolphins consider a roster overhaul. If Miami can't secure a trade for Fitzpatrick, he could hit free agency.

Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports lists Washington as a potential landing spot for Fitzpatrick, alongside the New York Jets. Both teams are eager to bolster their defensive backfields after challenging 2025 seasons. The Commanders, however, are just two years removed from an NFC title game and have a defensive-minded head coach in Dan Quinn, making them an attractive destination.

While the Jets are rebuilding, the Commanders are looking to reload through free agency and the draft. Fitzpatrick would bring leadership to Washington's secondary, but GM Adam Peters is cautious about trading more draft picks, especially after acquiring left tackle Laremy Tunsil, which cost them second and fourth-round picks in April's draft.

If Fitzpatrick becomes a free agent, Washington might pursue him. However, a trade seems unlikely, even for a late-round pick. The Commanders are focused on strategic acquisitions to elevate their defense without compromising future draft assets.
