Sam Cosmi has heard all the noise about the Washington Commanders’ offensive line, and he’s not interested in entertaining it.
The chatter started this summer after left tackle Laremy Tunsil tore his triceps and talk immediately turned to what the group might look like in 2026. Center Nick Allegretti was also a target, with questions swirling about whether he could handle the job of replacing Tyler Biadasz.
Then came the joint practice with the Ravens last month, when Washington was missing three starting offensive linemen, including Cosmi at right guard. One Washington media member called the line “inoperable,” and that single word helped shape a national storyline about the Commanders before the season even got rolling.
Cosmi said he and his teammates block that stuff out and trust each other, while also noting that general manager Adam Peters clearly had confidence in the unit as well. Peters didn’t add a replacement for Allegretti, even though some fans wanted him to.
The Commanders opened against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1, so the line’s first test came against one of the league’s most respected defensive fronts. Washington lost 24-22, but the protection held up better than plenty expected.
Jayden Daniels was sacked only once, and Cosmi stood out in particular. One prominent NFL offensive line analyst said Cosmi put Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter “in Alcatraz.”
Cosmi addressed the criticism again Friday, and he made his stance plain.
“I like being underdogs,” Cosmi said. “I really don’t care what other people believe about us.
I know what we have in our group and how hard we work. I don’t really care about what people.....people don’t know, like the ins and outs about what’s in a game plan.
They see things, and they’re like, ‘oh my gosh, this, that, or the other.' It’s the most annoying thing.
People just need to shut up sometimes. They don’t know game.
They really don’t. So, just watch the tapes and shut your mouths.”
That was the kind of blunt response that fits the moment. Cosmi’s point was simple: the outside noise hasn’t matched what Washington believes it has in the room, and he’s done listening to people who haven’t seen the full picture.
