The Washington Commanders entered the week with a clear plan: lean on Marcus Mariota.
Dan Quinn has made it obvious he believes the veteran backup is built for this moment. He said, “We will start Marcus on Sunday, and there's nobody easier to rally around than him,” and added, “When you ask anybody on our team who some of our greatest leaders are, whether it's on or off the field, Marcus is somebody that constantly comes up.”
But the strongest vote of confidence didn’t come from Quinn. It came from the team’s captains.
Before Week 1, Quinn did something he normally doesn’t and named season-long captains by player vote. That group - Terry McLaurin, Jayden Daniels, Frankie Luvu, Jeremy Reaves, and Tress Way - went back to Quinn this week with a request that said plenty about how they view Mariota.
Quinn explained, “Our team, man, do we have a lot of confidence in Marcus as we're heading into this game. In fact, so much, I thought was such a cool thing,” Quinn said.
“The captains huddled up with me earlier in the week and said, ‘Hey, we'd like to make Marcus our sixth captain.’ And I thought, what a great tribute of brotherhood of those guys asking.
Of course, they were all, like, as on board as you can imagine. And I thought it was awesome, too.
But what a great example of teammate and leadership.”
That request lands differently because of who made it. Quinn had already described the original five as “some real heavy hitters as far as leading goes with our team, like proven and demonstrated.” He also said, “This is a group that, man, like I said, I'd follow them anywhere.”
Those are the players who pushed to bring Mariota into that circle.
For Washington, the timing is simple and unforgiving. The Commanders are 0-2, Jayden Daniels is out, and Mariota doesn’t have the luxury of a soft landing. Quinn has spent the week stressing that the team will rally around him, but the captains took it a step further and asked for Mariota to stand with them as a sixth captain.
That makes this about more than a letter on a jersey. It’s a public show of trust from the players who set the tone inside the building.
Now Mariota has to turn that trust into something on Sunday. Washington doesn’t need fireworks.
It needs him to take care of the ball and keep the Commanders in position to leave the day at 1-2 instead of 0-3. At this point, the weight of the role matters more than the title itself.
