The Washington Commanders have answered their biggest wide receiver question, and in doing so they’ve slammed the door on a Brandon Aiyuk reunion that had been floating around all offseason.
Washington officially landed Stefon Diggs, a move that gives Jayden Daniels another proven target and gives Terry McLaurin some much-needed help on the other side. For the Commanders, it’s a straightforward bet on a veteran who still has juice. For Aiyuk, it’s the latest turn in a messy saga that never really got off the ground.
Diggs came out of a normal free-agency process after his one-year run with the New England Patriots, and Washington clearly decided he was the cleaner fit. The Commanders had a receiver room that needed a real difference-maker beyond McLaurin, and Diggs checks that box without asking them to give up assets.
That matters because Aiyuk had been the most obvious alternative for Washington’s WR2 need. He was the name that kept circling the situation, especially with Daniels already in place and the two sharing Arizona State ties.
On paper, it made sense. In reality, the relationship between Aiyuk and San Francisco has gone so sideways that the 49ers are still trying to pry him loose from their control.
Aiyuk remains on the 49ers’ Reserve/Left-Team list, which means he does not count against their 90-man roster or salary cap, and he is not being paid. To get off that list, he would need to send a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell asking for reinstatement.
His situation took a major hit when he tore his ACL and MCL in Week 7 of the 2024 season, just months after helping San Francisco reach Super Bowl LVIII. That injury ended his season, required extensive surgery, and was followed by a breakdown in his relationship with the team during his recovery. He never made it back onto the field and later ended up on the reserve/left squad list.
Since then, Aiyuk’s summer has been defined by public shots at his current team, and his market has taken a hit along with it. San Francisco has already voided his 2026 guarantees amid the dispute over his rehabilitation, and with Washington now committing up to $12 million on a one-year deal for Diggs, the most natural landing spot for Aiyuk is gone.
That leaves the Commanders with a more stable answer and leaves Aiyuk stuck in a far less certain one. Diggs brings a simpler pitch, a more immediate fit, and a chance to work alongside McLaurin in a receiver group that now looks much more complete as the preseason approaches.
