The Washington Commanders are taking a closer look at veteran cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, as he's set to visit the team this Thursday. At 30, Witherspoon brings a wealth of experience to the table, having been a third-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers back in 2017.
His journey through the NFL has been quite the ride. After completing his rookie contract with the 49ers, which included a $973,572 signing bonus, Witherspoon signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Seattle Seahawks in 2021. But before he could settle in Seattle, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers just after camp.
Witherspoon found some stability with the Steelers, securing a two-year contract in 2023. However, in a move that surprised some, Pittsburgh released him in May of that year.
He soon found a new home with the Los Angeles Rams, where he signed a one-year deal. The Rams liked what they saw and brought him back for another one-year stint in 2025.
Last season, Witherspoon saw action in six games for the Rams. During that time, he recorded eight tackles, defended two passes, and snagged an interception. His ability to make plays when it counts could be exactly what the Commanders are looking for to bolster their secondary.
As Witherspoon visits Washington, fans will be eager to see if he can bring his veteran savvy and playmaking skills to the Commanders' defense. If this visit leads to a signing, it could be a pivotal move for both Witherspoon and the team's defensive lineup.
