The Washington Commanders are walking into Week 8 with a chance to reset their season in a hurry.
They’re coming out of the bye, and the opponent is a Philadelphia Eagles team that has dropped five straight. The Eagles beat Washington less than two months ago, but a lot has changed since then. Jalen Hurts is out for the season, Cam Jurgens and Lane Johnson are no longer on the team, and both sides of the ball are dealing with notable injuries.
That doesn’t make this automatic. NFC East games rarely are. But it does give the Commanders a real opening, and the path to taking advantage of it starts with four clear priorities.
First, Washington has to keep Saquon Barkley and the Eagles’ ground game from dictating everything. Philadelphia’s offense has been sputtering even before Hurts went down. Through Week 8, the Eagles rank 27th in rushing yards per game, 26th in passing yards per game and 29th in points per game.
Tanner McKee hasn’t topped 215 passing yards in either start, and with Dontayvion Wicks and DeVonta Smith both out, the passing game isn’t the main concern. The Commanders need to make sure Barkley and Dameon Pierce don’t take control on the ground.
On the other side, Washington should have a chance to get its own run game moving. Philadelphia has usually been stout against the run, but that hasn’t been the case this season. The Eagles are 27th in run defense and just gave up more than 200 rushing yards to the Cowboys last weekend.
Even without Jacory Croskey-Merritt, the matchup gives the Commanders a real shot to establish balance. Their rushing attack has been uneven, but this is the kind of opponent that should allow it to settle in.
Protection matters just as much. Keeping Jayden Daniels upright has to be a major focus, even if the Eagles’ pass rush hasn’t looked like its usual self. Philadelphia didn’t record a single quarterback hit on Dak Prescott last weekend, and injuries plus underperformance have taken the edge off that front.
That gives Washington’s banged-up line some breathing room, but only if it holds up. If Daniels starts taking hits, the whole plan gets a lot harder.
And then there’s the turnover battle, where the Commanders have another edge they need to cash in. Washington owns one of the league’s best turnover differentials, while Philadelphia has been one of the worst and is now leaning on an inexperienced quarterback.
That’s the kind of setup that can tilt a game fast. The Commanders should have chances to make McKee uncomfortable, and one takeaway could end up swinging the whole afternoon.

Commanders Suddenly Face A Big Trade Deadline Decision At Wide Receiver
The wide receiver market is starting to loom over Washington as the NFL trade deadline on Nov. 10 approaches, and the Commanders are at least being linked to a move that could help deepen their passing game. ESPN has put three names in the conversation: Clevelands Jerry Jeudy, Baltimores Rashod Bateman and Tampa Bays Chris Godwin, giving the front office a short list of options with very different levels of appeal.
Each candidate comes with a different type of fit and a different level of realism, which is what makes this such a tricky decision for Washington. Bateman appears to be the cleanest match for what the Commanders might want, while Godwin is the most complicated swing of the group because of his injury history and age, leaving the team to weigh upside against the kind of certainty it can actually get before the deadline. Commanders Trade Debate Just Got Real On The Offensive Line
Washingtons offensive line has been a point of concern this season, with the unit sitting 20th in the NFL by PFFs grading. That backdrop is what makes the latest trade chatter worth watching, because any move up front would be aimed at stabilizing a group that has not consistently given the offense the kind of protection and flexibility it needs.
ESPN has floated the Commanders as a possible landing spot for New Orleans guard Cesar Ruiz, a player whose appeal goes beyond one spot on the interior. Ruiz brings the kind of versatility teams covet along the line, and a deal would make sense on paper for both sides, but for now it remains only a projection rather than an actual transaction. Commanders Season Could Decide How Soon Laremy Tunsil Returns
Laremy Tunsils road back to the field is still in the early stages, but there is at least some encouraging news for the Commanders. The veteran left tackle tore his triceps in training camp and had surgery, leaving Washington to move forward without one of its biggest offseason additions while he works through the rehab process.
Dan Quinn said Tunsil is still a few weeks away from his next medical check to see how the healing is progressing, and the signs so far have been described as on track. Even so, whether Tunsil plays again this season may end up depending as much on where the Commanders stand in the standings as on the next round of evaluations. [Read more 🡒]
