Commanders' First-Round Pick Becomes Clear After Bold Free Agency Moves

After reshaping their roster in free agency, the Commanders' choice at No. 7 in the NFL Draft seems increasingly clear, with intriguing options like Ohio States Carnell Tate on their radar.

Adam Peters' bold approach to free agency was just what the Washington Commanders needed. With some cash to burn and several key positions to address, Peters kicked things off in style, setting the stage for a promising offseason.

While not every target landed in Washington, the roster improvements are undeniable. This newfound depth also gives the Commanders some intriguing options as they head into the 2026 NFL Draft.

Sitting at No. 7 overall, Peters has plenty of choices. He could bolster the defense, trade down to gather more picks, or even find a game-changing weapon for quarterback Jayden Daniels to rely on for years to come.

One exciting possibility is Ohio State's wide receiver, Carnell Tate. NFL.com's Eric Edholm recently projected Tate as the Commanders' pick in his latest mock draft. Tate would be an ideal complement to Terry McLaurin and potentially the next big thing in Washington's receiving corps.

"The Commanders really need a complement to Terry McLaurin. Carnell Tate naturally gains easy separation and generates big pass plays for his size, which is the kind of skill set Jayden Daniels could use," Edholm noted.

Peters swung for the fences with Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs, but ultimately came up short. Instead, Dyami Brown and Van Jefferson Jr. were brought in, likely as rotational options. What Washington truly needs is a dynamic playmaker, and Tate fits the bill perfectly.

While Tate might not be known for his after-the-catch prowess, his skills as a true X receiver are exactly what NFL teams covet. Playing alongside Jeremiah Smith certainly helped his profile, but Tate's physical gifts stand on their own.

With fluid movement, sharp routes, and keen spatial awareness, Tate has a knack for making things happen. It's easy to see why the Commanders would be interested, though they might face some anxious moments waiting for their turn to pick.

There's a real possibility that Tate could be snatched up before Washington gets the chance. The Cleveland Browns, picking at No. 6, are on the hunt for a standout receiver to pair with Jerry Jeudy, and Tate is widely regarded as the top prospect in this year's class.
