Trey Amos has given the Commanders a much-needed boost, and it comes at exactly the right time.
After a rookie season that flashed promise before ending with a broken fibula after 10 games, the Washington cornerback now says he should be fully healthy when training camp opens. He shared the update on his Twitch stream, and for a team waiting to see what Amos can become, that matters.
The No. 61 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft had already shown enough to make Washington believe it may have found a steal. He wasn’t flawless, but his start made the upside easy to see. Now the focus shifts to whether he can put the injury behind him and pick up where he left off.
That health piece is everything for the Commanders’ secondary. The team has been patient with Amos, and it will keep taking a careful approach through the summer. There’s no reason to rush him, especially with the possibility that he develops into their long-term CB1 with a little more refinement.
The goal is simple: build him up steadily so he’s ready for Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles. His positive update doesn’t change that plan, but it does make the path look a lot better.
Amos fits what Daronte Jones wants to do. He brings size, length and physicality, and he tackles well, tracks the ball downfield and can make life miserable for receivers in contested-catch situations. If he responds the right way to Jones’ demands, he could move quickly from promising young defender to real difference-maker.
Of course, it all comes back to staying on the field. Amos is making progress, but the Commanders can’t get much out of him if he’s stuck on the sideline.
If he does hold up, Washington could have a strong group with Amos, Mike Sainristil and Amik Robertson. General manager Adam Peters also added Rasul Douglas recently, and the team is hoping for more encouraging production there as well. If 2023 second-round pick Quan Martin moves back to nickel, the back end could end up looking better than many expect.
Amos has a lot on his shoulders, but he also has the talent to keep climbing. For Commanders fans, this latest update is enough to lift the mood in a big way.
