The Washington Commanders are settling into regular season work, but the injury picture is still doing plenty of talking at practice.
Assistant general manager Lance Newmark met with reporters before Tuesday’s session and addressed the two tight ends the team added to the practice squad. His point was clear: the move wasn’t made because of the four tight ends already on the roster. That conversation came with Ben Sinnott still working back from an oblique injury, though he was at practice yesterday and handled limited work.
The injury list remains a major theme of camp. Laremy Tunsil is dealing with a triceps injury, and Jer’Zhan Newton has a pectoral injury, with both expected to miss most, or all, of the season. Running back Bill Croskey-Merritt, who had been dealing with a groin issue, returned to practice today.
There was also a positive development along the offensive line. Center Nick Allegretti has missed most of training camp with a calf strain, but he was back on the field the last two days. He’s wearing sleeves over the injured leg, yet he has been snapping to both Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota.
On the other side of the ball, two edge rushers remain in question. Odafe Oweh, who is dealing with a calf injury, and K’Lavon Chaisson, who has a knee injury, are still working off to the side. Their Week 1 availability is not settled, and Quinn told reporters Monday that Oweh won’t practice this week.
The Commanders are back in practice mode, but the health of several key names is still shaping the conversation.
