Commanders Face A Brandon Aiyuk Decision That Could Split Fans

Brandon Aiyuk is making a last-ditch effort to join the banged-up Commanders, but off-field antics and reservations from leadership may keep him sidelined.

Brandon Aiyuk has taken a real step toward getting back into the NFL, but that doesn’t mean the Washington Commanders are suddenly ready to jump in.

The wide receiver has hired Drew Rosenhaus to represent him, according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, and that shifts the conversation from offseason noise to an actual comeback effort. For Aiyuk, the immediate goal is clear: get reinstated and back on the field. For the San Francisco 49ers, there is still the matter of whether they would even let that happen by cutting him loose.

That part has not moved yet. The Niners have been reluctant to do so, and if Aiyuk applies for reinstatement and is healthy enough to play, they would be staring at a major decision.

Washington had long been floated as a possible landing spot for Aiyuk, and plenty of people treated it like a done deal at one point. General manager Adam Peters never made the move, though, and Aiyuk’s own social media behavior only made that decision look more obvious.

He took shots at everybody. He even threw shade at Daniels while also making it clear that Washington would be his preferred destination. The Arizona State product is still under contract with the San Francisco 49ers, and he showed no desire to apply for reinstatement despite his bold claims on Instagram.

Now the situation looks different, at least on the surface. Rosenhaus is known for working situations like this to his clients’ advantage, and if there’s a path for Aiyuk to land somewhere quickly, the Commanders could be one of the first teams contacted.

They do have a need. Terry McLaurin is out for the campaign and potentially beyond with a torn patellar tendon, and Washington lined up with Stefon Diggs, Treylon Burks, and third-round rookie Antonio Williams as its starting trio against the Philadelphia Eagles. That group played well, but the Commanders still may not be in position to climb back into the playoff picture without more help.

Peters knows Aiyuk well. He was part of the San Francisco front office that drafted him in the first round, and he praised Aiyuk as a person at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine.

Even so, this is where the fit gets messy. Aiyuk hasn’t played since the 2023 campaign, and while he is reportedly healthy after a serious knee problem, being healthy and being in football shape are two different things.

There’s also the question of whether the relationship with Daniels is even salvageable. The receiver is talented, but if Daniels is not on board, this becomes a non-starter.

And that’s before getting to the bigger locker-room picture. The idea of Aiyuk and Diggs together is already enough to raise eyebrows. In the NFL, nothing can be ruled out, but this would be a powder keg waiting to go off at any moment.

Aiyuk’s move to Rosenhaus is a sign of growth, a sign of self-reflection, and a sign of how desperate his situation has become. But even with Washington thin at receiver, it may still not be enough to change the Commanders’ mind.

Jaguars Suddenly Have A Brian Thomas Jr. Debate They Never Wanted

Brian Thomas Jr. looked like one of Jacksonvilles cleanest building blocks after a strong rookie debut, but his second season has brought a different conversation. The Jaguars still have support from the coaching staff and Trevor Lawrence, yet Thomas has seen his production and playing time dip in 2024, and his place in the offense now looks less secure than it did a year ago.

For a receiver who arrived with real long-term promise, that kind of slide naturally invites outside interest, and trade chatter has already started to swirl around him. Several teams have been mentioned as possible fits, which only adds to the sense that Jacksonville may have to decide whether Thomas is still part of the core or a name worth listening on if the right offer comes along. Commanders Trade Deadline Talk Just Got Real After A Telling Roster Shift

The Commanders trade deadline chatter picked up after a notable roster wrinkle in their recent game, when Mike Sainristil did not take a defensive snap. For a team already juggling concerns along the interior offensive line, at defensive tackle and at running back because of injuries and availability issues, that kind of usage shift naturally invites questions about how general manager Adam Peters might try to balance the roster in the coming days.

Nothing is official yet, and Washington is still in the stage of weighing options rather than making moves. But with the deadline approaching and the roster showing clear pressure points, the conversation around possible upgrades has become more than idle speculation, especially if Peters decides the best path forward is to deal from a position of relative depth to patch a more urgent need elsewhere. Commanders Face One Big Trade Deadline Decision After Saving Season

The Commanders bought themselves some breathing room with their win over the Eagles, and suddenly the conversation around the trade deadline looks a lot different. Instead of wondering whether the season was slipping away, Washington is back in the NFC East race and in position to think about how Adam Peters might reinforce a roster that has been tested by injuries and uneven stretches.

That makes the next few days worth watching closely, because the front office has a chance to address more than one need if it wants to keep this push alive. One possibility that has surfaced is help at receiver, where Josh Downs would fit the kind of young, useful addition Washington could use, while the defensive front could also use another body if Javon Kinlaws knee issue lingers. The deadline will show whether the Commanders are content with the surge theyve made or ready to spend to make it last. [Read more 🡒]
