As NFL free agency looms on the horizon, the Washington Commanders are gearing up for what could be an explosive period of signings. With the offseason just around the corner, there's chatter that the Commanders might be ready to make some significant moves early on.
The team has both needs and resources, particularly on the defensive side. With new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones at the helm, Washington is looking to bolster its defense. However, with only two picks in the top 100 of the 2026 NFL Draft, free agency becomes a crucial avenue for acquiring talent.
The Commanders are in dire need of pass rushers. Currently, the only edge rushers under contract are Dorance Armstrong, who is recovering from knee surgery, and Javontae Jean-Baptiste, who is coming off a torn pec in 2025. With free agents like Von Miller, Jacob Martin, Preston Smith, Jalyn Holmes, and Drake Jackson available, it's clear that Washington will be actively seeking multiple edge rushers, whether through free agency or the draft.
The challenge lies in predicting the type of scheme Jones will implement. This uncertainty makes it difficult to determine whether Washington should prioritize edge rushers or focus on someone who can generate pressure from the interior. With Daron Payne, Javon Kinlaw, and Jer'Zhan Newton already on the roster, the Commanders have some interior talent, but consistency has been an issue.
While there's plenty of discussion around signing edge rushers like Trey Hendrickson, Odafe Oweh, Joey Bosa, or Boye Mafe, another intriguing option is adding an interior pass rusher. Enter John Franklin-Myers, a standout from the Denver Broncos.
Franklin-Myers, who played a pivotal role in Denver's top-ranked defense in 2025, is set to be a free agent. Despite Denver's cap space, they haven't secured a deal with him yet.
Last season, he tallied 25 tackles, including six for loss, 7.5 sacks, and 15 quarterback hits. His consistent performance over the last two seasons, with at least seven sacks each year, underscores his impact.
At 30 years old, Franklin-Myers is a seasoned veteran, but he's been playing some of his best football recently. His journey from a fourth-round pick by the Los Angeles Rams in 2018 to a key player for the Broncos showcases his resilience and growth. Versatile in both 3-4 and 4-3 defenses, he can play defensive end and tackle, making him a valuable asset.
In addition to his pass-rushing prowess, Franklin-Myers is strong against the run. Spotrac projects his next contract to be around $7.9 million annually, though he could command more on the open market.
While the spotlight is on edge rushers, Franklin-Myers should not be overlooked. His skill set and experience make him a prime candidate for the Commanders' defensive plans.
